I've been out of touch with printer technology for a few years and I'm looking for some recommendations. I'm looking for a new photo printer (not one of the small 4x6/5x7 printers, but a full desktop printer that prints photos well).

I'd be looking for at least 8.5x11 prints, possibly 8.5x14, from a 15+ MP camera. I'm imagining that HP, Epson and Canon are still the tops of the market, but can anyone suggest any series they've had good output from?

Much appreciated!

I've had luck with a Canon inkjet before (an ip6000D, to be exact), though it does stripe if you leave it standing for too long. The simple/cheap ink tanks are neat, too.

I have the Canon PIXMA Pro9000. I know there is a generation 2, but I love my gen 1. I have printed tons of stuff that have been in exhibits and portfolios... I have had nothing but outstanding results and comments. Also you can find some new Pro9000 gen1 or 2 for around $200(craigslist/photo forums). They usually bundle these printers with camera like the 5d mark II or 1d Mark IV, then they sell those printers off.

I use to have a epson R1800 and R1900 but both failed in comparison. I would not recommend HP for photos, just because a lot of paper manufacturers do not really have a lot of paper profiles for HP.
