Anybody have any experience modding phones? My dad has a phone fetish and I thought I'd like to try modding one of his older phones. I probably won't be touching the receiver or the buttons, yet. Anything I should watch out for?

Thanks,

eh, just buy one of those neon light fones that used to be in fashion LONG ass time ago..

if you want to do some other mod.. i 've seen somebody put a LED in a phone line...

pretty sweet.. but i wouldn't waste my time

Hey I'm off for exam week right now and bored as hell. Need something to occuppy my time :).

umm, well I would unplug it first, because they can give you a nasty shock, especially if the phone rings while you're tinkering inside

can u believe that actually happened to me while installing a phone jack for my dsl?

lol

I get zapped by friggin' ringing phone lines every time I have to work with them

However, I think this fellow is looking to mod a cell phone

Oops, should have specified that. No, not a cell phone, just a regular hardline phone with no LCD display, no fancy gimicks either. Don't worry, I'll disconnect it before I start anything. Never been zapped before though...

Back during my educational days, I used to always strip wire in electronics with my teeth. I hated using stripers. Anywho, one day I was working at a job site and the phone line got cut. I jumped in the hole and said "I'll fix it". You know those phone lines are the same size wire as the stuff in class and so I went to strippin the only way I knew how. Man that still hurts.

I'm as big into phones as I am into comptuers...

I know a lot about modding Nextels and stuff...LED mods can basically be dont on any phone...

Got any questions?

If you get your power for the LED from the main phone line, remember that the power does jump quite a bit when it is ringing, i.e. You should filter out the jumps from your led with either a voltage regulator or a capacitor.

think it hits 80VAC or something like that

48volts direct current when the phone is off the hook in both the tip and ring wires, when the circuit is closed (off the hook), the phone is then dropped to 9v. ringing is a 90v 20hz AC wave

basicaslly, what I am explaining is dont mess up and strip your phone wire with your teeth (Like I did twice in a row, and still didnt learn)
