To stall or not to stall? This is a graphics card question.

Current/Future setup
I5-2500K
Asus Maximus Gen 3 mATX board (z68)
16GB GSkill 2133 Ram
128 GB Kingston Hyper-X SSD
Antec 850W HCP-Gold
Graphics Card ??

I am unsure if I want to stall for NVidia's next set of 3.0 Cards. The current spec'd out Mobo has a non-3.0 equivalent for $10 cheaper. Figured I would splurge though. Here are my options:

A) Utilize an already owned 450 GTS - Purchase a 6XX GTX upon release
B) Purchase another 450 GTS for about $100 and run SLI to stall - Purchase a 6XX GTX upon release
C) Forget about 3.0 and purchase the 580GTX I was planning on purchasing

Yeah, probably too close to something being announced to lay out close to $500 for a GTX 580.

I think you can get used GTX 580's for around $350 right now. This is the only option you should consider IMO. They'll drop in price even more when the new cards come out though.

Well, some people are saying two months, but, the Kyle and Brent here reckon June before kepler is out, so you could be waiting 6 months. I even heard reports that it might be later than that.

If I was you, I would splash out and get the 3.0 board, might as well get it now, especially if you don't upgrade that often. And I would look into buying a 570gtx to keep me going until the next generation comes out.

Why not get a 7970? If you were considering a 580 then it's a pretty obvious alternative. It's better in every aspect and about the same price as a 3GB 580. Unless you're running 3D Vision, CUDA or need Physx for some reason.

Kyle already confirmed hes now hearing March/April in another thread.

Thanks all for the posts.

@rdqlus - i have always been an EVGA fan, specifically for their warranties. I originally purchased an 8800 GT, which broke 2 years later and they gave me a 9800 GT in its place, which then broke about 3 years later and they switched out for my current 450 GTS. Guess I am sold on EVGA warranties and Nvidia. No ATI manufacturers really offer as good of a warranty service

It appears that most are suggesting what my gut was telling me and that is to just wait it out with my single card. This is only the 2nd gaming rig I have built with my first one being back in '05. I will eventually run an SLI format from this rig, but that is probably an upgrade that will happen about 1-2 years after the purchase of the 6XX GTX.

So every EVGA card you've bought has died? I guess that warranty thing has been working for you but I'm not sure that's a good thing ...
