Last night I was playing doom3 on my pc, I noticed it started raining, I saw a couple of flashes but heard no thunders so I figured the storm was far.

Suddenly I saw a flash and a screaming thunder that made War of the worlds special effects look like a 50's movie. (errr, no pun intended)

I swear I saw a sparke come out of the pc case, of course I paniced and shut down and unplugged eveything even the network cord. I have another old pc I use to download stuff, It was downloading far-cry 64bit patch. By the time I reacted it was too late, something had burned.

I feared the worst, did my 3 days old A64/6800gt suffered the same fate? The storm had gotten worse, no way I was gonna try it now.

I couldn't sleep, hours passed and it wouldn't stop raining. I remember the sun was coming out before I could finally close my eyes.

I wake up an hour ago, I inmediately go to my room and hook up the pc, turn it on, fans start spinning, no pic on the monitor, the green led only flashes..

(EP3 Darth Vader's) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

My baby is dead, I turn it off and back on, same result, all hope is lost.

I turn off the monitor and for some reason I turn it back on... the most beautiful Windows 64 boot screen I've ever seen appears.

It's ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!, It's ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!

My baby survived, I couldn't be any happier.

It seems only the dvd-rom combo has died, everything else seems to be working properly.

Second, sorry to hear about your close call.
Try getting a REAL surge protector and not just a powerbar.

just kidding... :p

I do have a surge protector and an UPS, probably the dsl/network was the cause of trouble. The other pc is dead (not that I care much, i'm building another just now), so is its 21" CRT monitor which was about to die anyway.

OKAY good, you have a UPS, hope its no one you picked up at a flea market for 50 bucks.


You should always run your Cat 45 cable into a surge protector also.

Unless you run wireless like me... can't fry my connection to my comp only my router.
 
We're do you live? I had a bad storm last night (i live in maryland)

Noted, I haven't seen a surge protector for Cat 5 cable. Aparently that was the cause of "death" for the old pc, replacing the network card brought it back to life. kind of strange as the dsl router and hub are ok.
 
I've been thinking that once I upgrade the cpu/mobo on my P4Northwood 3.06 w/7800GTX
I'll also invest in two of those Monster Power Line conditions thats normally used for home
theater setups... 1 for main use and 1 for lans...cause sometimes when I go to really big
lans the power distributions would look suspiciously dirty.

lol - reminded me a little of that WoW video for leeeeeroy... heh

Man - that's awesome news... I used to hate electrical storms growing up in North Carolina... wow... "OK everyone out of the POOL" my folks would yell at first sight of a flash and rumble... whew.. we had some doozies.
 
nice escape..wouldve sucked big time if ur comp blew up...especially with it being only 3 days old!!!

Yeah last week we were getting hit pretty hard with those eletrical storms. I was at work during one and it was like working in a battlefield with thunder shaking the place, lightning striking all around and the lights flickering each time.
