I'm seriously considering getting this platform just to play with it a bit, has anyone ordered / received a phenom yet and has the MSI K9A2 platinum(supposed to oc nicely on ht speeds)?

If so please post your experience!

I saw Phenom o/c threads on XS. You might be the first one to post a Phenom o/c here using a retail product.

I ordered a 9500; it arrives on Tuesday (tomorrow). I'm not one to OC as I prefer stability, but I'll post a mess of benches when I get around to it. I don't care about that windows garbage; I'll post of mess of Linux benchmarks, though.

AFAIK there is a TBL bug that makes the current "Phenoms" unstable at speeds over 2.4GHz.

hey! with some modding, a guy @ XS got the cpu stable with 2700mhz NB/l3 cache speed, hes running some benches vs his 2700cpu / 2200 nb speed to see if there is a diff

Post a link to the thread if you have the time.

Funny how all quesstions about the TLB/long term stability bug are "forgotten" in that thread...

Thx for the great input, Maybe once we get some results from this OC @ 2700mhz cpu / nb we can make some more conclusions?

Find it supicious that the questions are ignored, that is all.

maybe because they're after the OCing results rather then finding out about the bug? I mean the bug can affect OCing and it seems as it has so far since the NB is stuck @ a certain speed.

I Wonder, did amd hold the 9700 and up back because the scaling SUCKED with the low nb/l3 speed set so low to avoid the bug?

Then the point is moot, OC with no stability is like a packet of condoms...and no girls.

We might never know, the power usage should also be very high when ramping the MHz.

well so far it's stable :p not sure how stable ^^ waiting on updates, I might skip the first round of errata ridden phenoms

What is stable?
I've read about a dozen different definitions of 'OC stability' over the years on several different forums. It seems everyone has a different opinion. Recently, there was a guy who posted a thread about his results OC a Q6600 in the Intel sub-forum, and a major flame war with name calling erupted over that very topic. There's really no consensus with an issue like stability.

The other thread was closed, looks like this thread would be the new battleground

2.7ghz on stock voltages on the initial batch and non am2+ board sounds great. i bet if this came out before c2d cpu's than you guys would be

Oh God, I hope not. What the heck is going on in this sub-forum anyway? Even people on the same side seem to be at each other.

Intel CPUs are too fast, those fanbios finished what they need to do so early. In the end they are bored so they come to this subforum and you know what happen next ;)

i asked about this in another thread here "phenom overclocking". supposedly the TLB issue is fixable with a BIOS update, but i havent seen anything definitive yet

I see duby229 was banned with a capital B.I am surprised it took that long really given his last couple of dozen posts here.

Anyway the XS threads are a mixture of letdowns, and a few bright spots.2.75Ghz on stock vcore with the shitty stock sink is pretty good,IMHO,considering the mobo's out now that have any support at all for K10 are relatively unstable with Phenom .

It seems mobo OEM's are slow to offer real bios's at this point(M2N2 SLI,ETC...).I wonder if this points out AMD was overly late in supplying working sample chips to configure said bioes ? Months ago, people in the know (on XS.org) were saying we obviously needed better bios support, and that it would come at launch.... Desktop or server. Well, were here, now what ?

If even high end mobo's are seemingly getting the after sale support shaft, what does this bode for this launch? Hopefully we in the community will not have to wait overly long for solid bios's that can support real overclocking. One thing I really want to see,is Phenom on high end air (TRUE,Ultima 90i....)

Why have we not seen this yet ? All other things aside,I truly expected to see more people here adopt (regardless of current performance),if not the platform,at least the chip, and get some oc'ing going.

Where are all the [H] Phenom users ?

I've got one in my hands now. Unfortunately, it is not a retail product. I haven't pushed it yet, or really done that much with it, but I will here in the next couple of days.

I think Johan on Aces said the fix kills performance. He's currently doing in-depth testing and is posting progress and findings.

Is it a B2 stepping or earlier, do you know?

I do not know. CPU-Z isn't working on that system for some reason.

What boards and bioses do you have access to for testing (and what will you use) ? Alot of peeps on XS (some quite expirienced with oc's ) are running into a brick Wall, regardless of board or bios used. The software that Kyle talked (AOD) about is not (yet) transefering into success out in the wild.

Will you try with higher end sinks Dan ? The stock sink,is as usual crap, doesnt even have the heatpipes the olders ones did :(

Oh,can you tell us if AMD gave you this ES ?

I'm not going to get too specific about what I've got on the bench, but I'm not using the stock heatsink. Right now I'm using a Zalman CNPS8000. The temperatures seem to be ok at the moment. I will say that typically, if I am having problems I have access to BIOS versions that are not yet released.

One must bear in mind that I'm testing the motherboard, not the CPU specifically. I'll drop the multiplier down as low as I have to and just crank the FSB up as high as possible. I'm looking at the board's max overclockability, not the CPUs.

Thanks for the feedback Dan :) Good to hear.I am DYING to see your results. Is this going to be a 790XX mobo roundup ? or somesuch ?

It will be a 790FX board review. Unfortunatley it will not be a roundup. I'd love to do one, but I've never had the opportunity. You would not believe how much work that would actually entail.

Damnit !! When will the BE's arrive ?? AMD's slides say Q4 07,and yet the years end is very fast approaching.

Is the BE 9600 still a go,and will AMD be pushing OEM's to get faster and more reliable bios fixes out for us soonish ? This is nuts.

ahh man, that sucks, banning him right before he spilled the beans

atech I didn't forget about the other thread :p just didn't have a chance to do some digging last nite.

man my income tax return is coming soon >< I hope a new stepping with the bug fix is out by then :D I could just get it now too >_> but that would be counter productive

I wish I could say the same, but I have to wait until Feb or March to get that ball rolling. :( Worse yet, most purchases over 300~ have to be ok'd with the wife. I am dying to grab one now and a AM2+ mobo, but know I'll be severly disapointed with the overclocking outcome, based off current data available.Me needs a Black Edition Phenom, and me needs it NOW !! Oh,and some newer bios releases that dont cripple overclocking!!

That Gigabyte board and especially the Asus look great, but data suggest current bios's for them are sub par.AOD works great with X2's but seems to fall short with K10's in the wild.

Common AMD !! :D
