I picked up that combo today at Fry's with the Gigabyte 790XTA-UD4 and the Phenom II 965. I looked up the processor and it looks like I have the 125W one :D I was going to use that combo for my dad, but it looks like he doesn't need it, so what the hell, might as well use it. I currently have a Q9550 at 3.825 ghz. Would I see performance gains over the Q9550? and how are temperatures for those of you who have this chip? I also appreciate AMD's kinder upgrade possibilities since I'm kinda stuck forever with socket 775, lol.

much help appreciated :)

if you overclock the hell out of it you might see some small gains(not likely, then again I am not really far into the bench's on the Q9550), in realworld application you might lose some power in some stuff and gain in others. but the upgrade path will be good :) also I assume you mean you got the C3 revision by the "125W one", if so you should hit 4GHz on air easily and probably higher

Is it true that ati cards run better with an amd processor? and do I have to purchase ddr3 ram or can i reuse ddr2 ram for now?

That board you picked up is an AM3 board, you need ddr3 according to their website.

Memory

1. 4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory (Note 1)
2. Dual channel memory architecture
3. Support for DDR3 1866(OC)(Note 2)/1333/1066 MHz memory modules

Doesn't say anything about ddr2.

From what I've heard there is a ton of headroom on the new c3 amd chips. Using the setup you got from frys over your c2q would leave you in a better position in the future when the hexacores start showing up. I personally would go for that but i am an amd fanboy and have been one since the duron. >.>

You won't see an upgrade from your current Intel platform. The AMD and Intel chip perform very similar in games, and Intel usually has the advantage in everyday apps. The only way that will change is if you can clock your 965 to 4GHz+. But, the AM3 platform does have a longer lifetime, compared to Core 2. AMD learned their lesson after the whole S939->AM2 fiasco. As for AMD graphics performing better with AMD CPUs, that's a load of bullocks. AMD came up wit the whole "Dragon" platform as nothing more than a marketing ploy.

He can actually go higher than 4.0GHz on air. I've got a C2 955 and I hit 4.0GHz on air.

Not to hi-jack this thread but, I picked up this same combo @ Fry's. It was a great deal and the 790XTA-UD4 seems like a pretty decent board. The only problem I have so far is getting my chip stable OVER 3.9Ghz. It's OCCT stable @ 3.91Ghz but anything over that won't pass OCCT. Since there are only 2 revisions to the bios, I'm thinking it's an immature bios problem.

Yes, I'm using aftermarket cooling, Yes, I'm using a quality ( Corsair ) power supply. Yes, I'm using ram approved for this board. And lastly, yes I'm familiar with OCing AMD cpu's.

Just my $.02 in case you bought this combo hoping to OC the snot out of it.

I got the same deal at frys. Im on an e6400 dual core @ 2.8ghz with an 8800gtx.

Im hoping to see a nice performance gain jumping to this. Im gonna pickup a 4890 today. What is a good aftermarket cpu cooler for this chip? Id prefer one that frys sells so i can get all of this today including the ddr3. I just got my antec 650w psu last week so I'm ready.

Pretty stoked tryin AMD again my first machine I built was an and K62-350 MHz.

I too picked up this combo and have it running at 4GHz stable with 1.44V. I did have to raise some things up though. It's stable at 4.2GHz but need 1.5V so I decided to go with the lower power consumption. It must be something else that is limiting you.

(platano)

What kind of CPU cooler and RAM did you go with? I'd like to shoot for 4ghz with my setup.

if you already have Q9550 @ 3.8G, you will not see a performance gain from it.

and to be honest, you will actually see some performance decrease due to AMD still can't catch up clock to clock to Intel.

unless you somehow manage to get your CPU up to 4.5G, I see no reason switching to PII 965. Its pretty much a downgrade so far from what I have been testing.

I put my money on a true being towards the top as far as air coolers go. I haven't really seen an h50 do any better(mostly worse) but there are people who swear by them.
