I have a friend who is looking to get rid of his old build (motherboard, Phenom II 965 Black Edition, and 8 GB of RAM) for about $30. I have no need for it, but I feel like this is a steal that I really shouldn't pass up as I could probably turn around and sell it and make a little bit of money. I know this CPU is discontinued, but Amazon has it for about $150 used.

Should I jump on it? I'm an Intel guy and have never owned any AMD products, so i really have no idea if it's worth my time. I'd either sell it outright or piece together a new build on the cheap. I would need a case and power supply, which I know I could probably find a decent combo of.

I realize this may be a stupid thread given the price he wants, but I thought I'd ask anyway to see if anyone has experience with this processor to see if anyone would even be interested in it anymore. is it worth the trouble and cost to build a machine off of it and sell it?

How much is your time worth? If you personally don't have a use for it I wouldn't buy it.

No ones gonna pay 150 for a used Phenom II by the way. (X4)

I know no one will pay $150 for a used Phenom II, which is kind of why I'm not sure if it would be worth trying to even bother putting the thing together. I figure if I buy a case and power supply I would be lucky to get $150 if I sold it all, which would probably be probably $70 profit at most. It really won't take long to put it all together though so it will be a quick profit. However, I don't have a buyer yet either, which may end up being kind of difficult.

Ebay has just the Phenom II listed for ~$30, so given that it sounds like a deal.

Thanks for the input all. I think I'll pick it up and try and make a quick buck.

I sold my 960t last week for 70 shipped. Its got a better memory controller...but you should be able get around that for just the CPU.

Unfortunately that's pretty close to the going rate on fleabay. I was looking at a 1090T or 1100T and they easily cost close to or as much as my 3570 is going for used. Absolutely nuts.

Always the way when you have people wanting to upgrade their old obselete rigs with the CPUs they didnt get round to buying when they were $60 a go in retail.

I sold my SKT939 Opteron 180 for a silly price in 2009.

All those 2012 $30 2133 DDR3 kits will be going for $100+ in a year or two.

Buy Xeon kit if you can, thats dirt cheap!

Personally I think it's a steal. That was my previous build, my dad still uses it for gaming and it's holding up well.

Well worth it a case and PSU are not that expensive. Still a decent processor for most people

This. Newer and better AMD CPUs for $100 or so. I sold mine with an old motherboard, RAM, CPU cooler for about $160 recently on this forum. Alone you're looking at $60 or so.

It is a solid CPU, but being that it is used and in a dated socket, and often motherboards, unless you are selling it in a bundle it would be hard to move I would think.

I sold a 965BE by itself on amazon for $100 + $5 for shipping. I would definitely buy your friends combo even if you don't plan to keep it. Part it out and make a quick buck.

Looks like the average price for a 965BE (new AND used) on Amazon UK is around £180 ($288).

I managed to get one new from Amazon for my brother last Xmas for £65.00 ($104).

Average asking on Ebay at the moment is at least $150 and thats cheap.

People want to replace those old Athlons for something better.

In my post I specifically mentioned not being able to sell Phenom II X4s for $150. The Phenom 1090T and 1100T are both six-core (X6) processors. I'm well aware that these can sell for $150 used but the original poster is asking about a quad, not a hex core.

But they do pay that.

For $30? Buy it and sell the kit for $50-$80 for quick turn around. I was actually thinking around $100...Or slap it into an htpc!
