I finally got the finances to upgrade my cooling. I've got an IC7-Max3 with a 3.0GHz Prescott running stable at 3.85GHz (1.56 vcore) with OCZ DDR500 on 1kg of heat piped copper and just about a turbine for a fan. It runs about 72 C under full load. I'm shooting for a 4.4GHz system once my 3.4 Prescott comes. :D

I'm thinking about either putting together a watercooling system or a vapor/phase cooling system. I hear OCZ has a good cheap on comming out soon.

Does anyone know how the temps compare between vapor and water? Any ideas what the coldest watercooling unit is for a socket 478? Any idea if you can upgrade the kit to handle a 939 AMD or 775 Socket?

FYI, kinda a n00b to extremem cooling, but I've read up a bit. Thanks any help!
 
in water cooling your tempscan only be as low as your ambient temp, unless you use some type of evap/bong style cooler. as for as phase goes i am not sure, i have seen people with -50 and colder
 
water and phase change can both be mounted on either company's recent platforms: s939, s754, s462, s478, s775 are all compatible with most retention systems.

water can probably get you load in the 40s, quietly.

the new OCZ phase can probably get you around 0 load, a good bit louder than water.
 
Phase change systems are great for getting high overclocks. They're also awesome for being loud, and expensive. Those things need a dedicated wall socket to run, you're looking at something close to 1000watts (expensive to run 24/7). And you need to account for condensation.

I'd say water dude, lots less hassle, and more self-contained, phase changing adds like a foot of height to your case.

nowhere near 1000 watts for modern phase change. i believe that the new OCZ is like 300 watts draw: it uses a comparitively small compressor.

OCZ says that the phase unit will be around 35 dBa from outside of the casing. it's not for those who like quiet computing, but it's nothing remarkable as compared to a system running stock air for everything.

modern retain phase change has a nice hard shell that seals around the processor and motherboard. there's still always the risk, but phase isn't like it was in the bad old days.

if you want to see a hassle, you should try to get a pelt cooling system that is opperable for more than 10 hrs at a time........let alone 24/7. :p

Haha, yes! Been through that one! Had it running 24/7 for about 18 months, and then went on a deployment, when i got home it didn't quite run the same. Need to finish tweaking it again..

Water will net you the most benefits of both worlds. Keeps temps low, and noise down too.

and compared to Phase (not OCZs anyway)is less painful on the wallet
 
As far as leaks go, is it safer to go with phase cooling? I was always concerned about a hose leaking and shorting out some expensive stuff with water cooling. I understand phase cooling to be made of much stronger material due to the pressure, but what would come out of it did leak? Would it be a substance like r-134a automotive refridgerant? Would it be more like antifreeze? Am I correct in thinking that a phase cooling system is basically the same as taking the AC components of a minifridge or a window AC unit and applying them to cool a CPU? If you do it right and take your time, you won't get any leaks, like me.

I have both a very nice Chilly1 Phase change system and a fully outfitted Aqua Computer setup.

Save yourself some time and just get some nice air cooling. Unless you want to mess around a lot with your computer(which I like to do) then Air is still the best thing you want to do.

You'd be better off investing in other components of your PC than going with an extreme cooling solution.
