Im looking at building a NAS with FreeNAS, however im getting bored with the traditional Router (Cisco WRVS4400) and want o play around with pfsense, is there a way to get these on the same machine Properly,I read that FreeNAS doesnt work well in Virtual environments...what about pfsense? would it be better to Run them in separate boxes?

so initally i bought some cheap components(g3220,asus B81-e,16Gb ram) to build a free nas server for Plex and some backups, but i like the idea of Pfsense, i just dont wanna have two more machines running in my office if i dont have to.

pfsense running fine under hyper-v and esxi. I don't use FreeNAS so I wouldn't know.

I can also confirm that pfSense and FreeNAS can both run simultaneously without issue on ESXi. On my FreeNAS box I used internal hardware RAID storage and just provided the VM with a virtual disk as opposed to passing anything through direct.
