pfsense + 3com NIC = disaster

I'm moving into pfsense, so I got an old Thinkpad T40, and bought a new 3com PCMCIA NIC, hooked everything up.

Problem is, the 3com fails miserably. It errors all over the place (buffer underruns, transmission errors, etc.), while the onboard Intel Pro 100/VE runs like a champ.

Can you guys (YeOldStoneCat and dashpuppy) tell me what is a good, reliable PCMCIA NIC I can use in this laptop that will work as good as the onboard Intel? I did my research and people recommended the 3com; I thought this would turn out good, but it turns out the 3com really sucks.

Thanks!

I never had problems running 3com on my pfsense setup on my desktop. What version of pfsense are you running the 2.x or 1.x something?

You probably just got a bad NIC. My 3c574 was a workhorse in my old laptop.

I'm running the latest pfsense 2.1.

:( This is a 3c575c PCMCIA NIC. Is this a good card, or will it continue to have problems if I get another one?

The one I used for a few builds did not have the dongle..it was a full height card like one of these

The 3com that I used doesn't have a dongle either, but it does have a small popout tab that you can push where the RJ45 jack comes out (they call it a X-Jack connector).

This Intel MBLA3400 that I just bought looks just like the pic you posted: a full height card.

Wanted to update this thread. Received and installed the Intel MBLA3400. Works like a charm. 0 errors and fast as hell. :)

Ahh yeah I remember those x-jack ones too....hated 'em.
Glad you got it running good.
