Petitioning for 970 Refund

Holy image sizes Batman, resize or throw a spoiler tag on that. Something is definitely too big when I need to scroll to see stuff on my monitors.

Thanks, and sorry for the image sizes. Apparently I fail at spoiler tags here too. :(

Found this interesting, wonder if we will see more of it.

"Minor performance tweaks for GTX970 users"

that is strange...never seen an update specifically targeting one card...might see future Nvidia drivers focusing on 970 performance as well

From Hard's Review:

"The GeForce GTX 970 is designed for 1600p gaming, and contains 1664 CUDA cores and 13 SM units. The memory consists of 4GB of 3GDDR5 modules, on a 256-bit bus that operates at 7GHz. The base clock a reference GTX 970 is 1050MHz and boost clock of 1178MHz. There are 64 ROPs on this video card, and 104 texture units. This video card has a TDP of 145W."

This is now proven to not be accurate with regard to Memory Bus and ROPs.

Hence, bait and switch.

Try again.

frame rates didnt change the bulk of the review is the same
unless you can prove the card that was reviewed had the specs listed then it is not a bait and switch
you got the same specs as tested

At the end of the day reviews are independent and irrelevant. What matters is what nVidia told the retailers and what they had on their website which was wrong.

Golden Tiger what you linked too is sadly all to common in hardware journalism. Nvidia really makes these reviewers not want to bite the hand that feeds. I wish we had a hardware website that had some balls.

you dont remember when hard bitch slapped NV for cheating in benchmarks do you....

Considering Guru3d has banned me from their forums (member since 2002 with many positive contributions) for pointing it out... I wouldn't imagine they care too much about their recklessness.

Impressive! You're too good for them anyway! :)

Who fucking cares what was reviewed. NV sold a card that they did not advertise and label properly. Nowhere did NV state that they were selling a card gimped above 3.5gb. They mislead users and got caught on it. Whether people have an issue with it currently is irrelevant.

But, Im sure that if these companies get away with it and people like you support them, they will continue to do it. When that day comes and it is an issue you have, dont whine about it. Just take it in the ass and say, THANK YOU!

wait WUT
you bought the card for what it said on the BOX? really?
because i read reviews from at lest 3 or 4 sites and compare them THEN i pick what im going to buy

if your buying hardware for whats on the box i got some hardware to sell you
and frankly even after this the card is still a good buy
people here scoff at being low balled when they say the card is crap
you cant have it both ways

ether the card is worth more then a 960 and less then a 980 or its worth the same or less then a 960

again you can SEE all this in the reviews YOU KNEW what you where getting
thats why Hard and other sites have them

if you like others seem to; are buying hardware based purely on the marketing hype well maybe you should start reading them

So review sites did not test for the future, they tested for the now. Performance now is fine but in 2 years, people will struggle as games become more demanding and monitors get upgraded to higher resolutions. Now, we are all screwed because "we knew what we were getting into"? Oh yeah, what am I thinking. No one keeps a video card for 2 years  Just like noone keeps a CPU for more than 2 (ahem......).

I completely agree that the GTX970 is fine for the majority of users TODAY. Its fine for my son. He is 14 years old. Do you think he will be upgrading his video card as the higher games demand? Fuck no, he is 14. He purchased something with his money that would last him years. In reality, there is a good possibility that he will be gimped in the future. So he should suffer because of the unknown that NV hid from all of us, including reviewers?

in 2 years your going to buy a new card...
an extra 512MB is not going to help when games need 5 to 6 GB then
and so what lower the AA settings

So you are making every reason for NV not to be at fault for this. Everyone should accept work arounds for them selling a gimped card and hiding it from EVERYONE. Just lower your settings. Games need 5-6gb in the future so upgrade in 2 years... blah blah blah

Then why the FUCK is there a market for the mid-range cards? Might as well stop producing them. They cant handle games that require 5-6gb. Hell, Im not even sure why they sell a 2gb GTX 960. What a waste of a card! Games today require more than 2gb. Now thats a great argument isnt it? What do you think the next generation high end card that has 6gb or 8gb going to have for a little brother? A 3gb or 4gb budget gaming card (ie: 960 to the 980). Wonder if they will gimp that card and disclose it.

I actually did base it off the specs from nVidia. I had an hour to order parts, I thought I knew the GB/Bandwidth/rops ect compared to my 980 so I ordered it for my relative for a 4690k build. I would have considered AMD more seriously if I had known it was gimped to hell.

Along with the picture timeline we need to compile all the weak arguements. :)

then you gambled and lost im it happens i bet on the Voodoo5 5500 back in the day

we are small market
most people are going to buy a 960 or lower or a console
thats just how it is

Yes we are a small market, but according to your logic there is no room for that market as games will take 5-6gb and so the 512mb gimped allocation has no bearing. But then you go on to say there is a large market who will utilize that those lower end cards with 4gb which means the GTX970 can potentially be used for years to come for those who cannot or do not want to upgrade but want a higher resolution.

you dont remember when hard bitch slapped NV for cheating in benchmarks do you....

I do but what exactly does that have to do with Guru3d or this subject? I am speaking out about this subject specifically.
What one site does in the past is pointless in the present.

Is there any GTX 970 owner with single card and a 2,560x1,440 resolution screen that would buy a different card at same price point given this new information? I have read hundreds of posts, many reviews of the GTX 970 cards, and the article on Anandtech regarding this is issue and I still bought a ASUS GTX 970 STRIX DirectCU II card today for $329. I'm very happy with this choice. Even with what I know now, in my opinion, this is the best choice at this price point for a single card and a 2,560x1,440 resolution screen. The R9 290X is over a year old, runs hotter, uses more power, and does not perform as well. The GTX 980 is out of my budget. I can understand people being frustrated by Nvidia but I still think this card can not be beat at this price.

You knew about the performance of the 970 when you bought it the reviews were out. You were down with it. Now that it came out that it actually achieves that performance and price point with hobbled memory architecture, you want your money back? What difference does it make? None NADA, NIL, ZERO. It still produces the same FPS as it did before, nothing has changed.
..................................................................................................Are you really not getting this?

whats with the car analogies all across the web, its hilariously bad.

The issue here is about relativity and customer service.

Are all those petitioning for a refund actually truthfully encountering problems as a result of the issue. Has daily usability been completely stopped as a result of the memory misrepresentation. If this is the case, then yea Nvidia should step up and refund those customers directly; the item does not work as described and its actually hindering ones normal way of life.

However if your 970 has been the best upgrade you have ever purchased and now you were the one of those singing Nvidia's praises during initial launch and now after this has come to light its time to refund the card... cause you can (and not cause its disrupting daily usage)....idk thats grey area that I`m sure Nvidia will answer in the coming weeks.

I get your frustration but I think you have to a) Vote with your wallet and about 50% of the market as well. Unfortunately that isn`t realistically possible since Nvidia and AMD release new lines of GPUs every single year and without a huge driving force they would not invest in doing such repeatedly. In addition as a [H] member computers and the tech that runs them don`t account for future time (I could wait for Skylake or purchase Haswell now, but by the time Skylake rolls around the next best thing is 1 year away, and then the next), rather they account for the best at the time of release, and mfgs dont want their products to go for long. It sad, but its either keep doing the next best thing, progressing the market or keeping it the same old old.

A bit OT but on the CPU side, due to lack of competition from AMD and this pesky thing called "fizzicks", things have really slowed to a crawl. From Sandy to Haswell IPC gains averaged around 17% as found by AnandTech. Keep in mind that's one die shrink and one arch change.

Broadwell got delayed by 1 full year (well 6 months if you count the Core M parts...), and further die shrinks are only going to get increasingly difficult. Plus unless you do video/photo editing for a living or want to eek out every last FPS, a $250 i5 quad core will be enough to last you a couple years at least, so there's no real motivation or urgency to upgrade.

Me personally I'm perfect happy with my Ivy-E setup, and won't be upgrading until Skylake-E at the earliest.

Paid $360 for the Gigabyte Gaming GTX970. Returning it for a refund and picking up a 290x lightning for $300 AR. Seems good to me.

So listening to the specifications given by a manufacturer and advertised for over 4 months is gambling?

specs mean little
reviews tell the real story
if it was all about specs the Voodoo5 should of murdered the GF2 it didnt.... why
it wasnt very fast at 32bit color i bet that 16bit color would last a bit longer
i lost it was still a very fast card i just had to stick with 16bit color

OH and bought my 780Ti thinking that there would be a 6GB 780Ti in time for to use the step up like with the 780 guess what NV shit canned the 780Ti 6GB but sold limited numbers of the 780 6GB
i didnt bitch about that and ask for my money back

same here the 970 is a very fast card you just cant max out every game
expecting to be able to max out games 1-2 years from now ARE YOU INSANE that has never been a thing
unless your buying the VERY top end like 780Ti Titan level stuff OH WAIT I DID
you picked an upper mid range card deal with it that its not going to maxing out games in 18 months

in a word... yes
sorry thats just way it is clearly you are new to pc gaming
this has ALWAYS been the case with few exceptions the 9800Pro, 8800GT
there is always a card now and that that out performs it market segment
but you cant always bet on that
the 970 is 95% of 980 for 1/2 the cost i really dont see the issue here

the 970 is mid range its based on the GM204 for fucks sake did you really think it was high end?
even the 980 isnt really the high end and you can thank AMD for this mess
Titan 2 and the 980Ti are the top end cards

Let me see if I have this straight. It's OK that Nvidia lied about the specs and cheated their customers, it's NOT OK that people are upset about it and complaining, any deficiencies that Nvidia cards have are AMD's fault, and the only cards that can be considered high end are unreleased and rumored to be delayed until next year.

Wow, mind=blown.

ya the trolls are strong in this thread

apparently at some point people began to think that manufactures advertising completely false specifications about a product is "A-OK!" if some or most people wont notice!

I keep my cards a LONG time, I upgraded to a 970 from a 470 and expected it to last me just as long, well, joke is on me... I have been using NVidia cards since the GeForce2 but it looks like the next one will be an AMD

the damage is done, and NVidia is making it worse

this could have been an opportunity for nvidia to show that it cares about it's customers and stands behind it's products, instead it's turned into "well, sucks to be you!"

IMO, a high end card is the fastest single GPU card available (we all know that all the dual-gpu cards are high-end, just for a different market). How long has the 980/970 been out? When will we see a "Ti"? Oh yeah, when NV needs to dump something on the market to battle with the 390x that is going to drop soon enough. In the meantime, the 980 is the high end card currently. If you really believe that the 970/980 are mid-range, you are the one who is fooled in all of this.

And apparently you are, as NV has you believing they did no wrong. They withheld information from EVERYONE and sold a product that was inferior to what they marketed. How is that OK in your eyes?

A better analogy than the "car" analogy would be along the lines of Intel sells the up and coming (for example) i7-5790k with an advertised speed of 3.5ghz, 4 cores w/ HT but in the end actually sold us a CPU that had 4 cores and only 2 HT threads. Would you feel robbed if Intel did that when you purchased a CPU believing it was 4/4? Would you just chalk it up to being OK as a 5790k is not a high end processor and it costs half of what a 5930k costs?

Your thought process is skewed. You are giving NV a pass on an issue that could become something more if everyone just accepts it for what it is. When this issue continues because no one bothered to give a shit this time around, you only have yourselves to blame.

Im not a fanboy, I can gladly return a card and goto the other side.

So Elios is mad that he has made some very poor GPU purchasing decisions based on unsubstantiated rumors... Because he has done this to himself multiple times, it is OK that Nvidia does it to their GTX970 customers by falsely listing the specifications and memory subsystem for over 4 months.

Glad we have the whole picture now. Thanks Elios.

A most astute observation.

But yeah that actually does explain everything.

Oh, the horror! I haven't seen so many tortured analogies since the VGA War. Please, please stop abusing those poor analogies. They never asked for this.
