Personal PVR

Here is the situation;

In the next year or so I plan on doing some long distance traveling at a week or two at a time. And I got a HD PVR that was provided from my tv provider and I got a bunch of shows that I have set to record regular basis. I also have a personal cloud device that I can access remotely.

So I started looking into different features for my cloud device, it looks like I can set it up as a PVR if I get an appropriate device for it. The PVR that I got from my provider only allows meto access those TV shows from my tv and nothing else.

This is where I need some help (as I'm a little bit confused on what's my best option).

From what I can see, there are USB tuners I can get to connect to my cloud. But I also can get tv tuners that I can connect Via ethernet? the HDHomerun is one device mentioned on my clouds list for compatible devices for the PVR. I also know the USB sticks works best with SD. But if I get something, I would prefer to record HD content as well. From what I read as well that Homerun broadcasts the signal wireless rather then send it over ethernet?

What I'm mainly looking for is to find a good tv tuner that I can connect to my cloud, either USB or ethernet? So I can take the tv shows that I currently watch on the PVR from my provider and have them on my cloud so I can watch my shows when I am out of town.

Or is there a way I can sync my shows from the PVR that's provided to me to myperson cloud?

The HDHomerun does not have built in wireless, so you would need some sort of an access point. The HDHomerun devices are tuners (Cable or OTA) that sit on your network via an Ethernet cable, and that's it, they aren't meant to stream to your mobile devices, you would need an intermediate device for that, like another PC running software, to compress the video and send it to your mobile devices.

Something like a SlingBox would be more appropriate for that and sounds like what you are looking for, unless that's the "cloud device" you mention but don't name or give specifics of.

If it helps, this is the program that I'll be using with my cloud device; http://www.synology.com/dsm/home_home_applications_video_station.php?lang=us

Synology provides software for moblie devices so I am able to view the tv shows that way. And under "Watch & Record Live TV" it mentions the HDhomerun is supported. The part of SLingbox that I like is that they say there is no hidden (or extra) fees. But the HDHomerun seems to have more features?

Sling doesn't DVR, its got to be hooked up to the cable company's DVR to work as one I think, if it can.

The one drawback from slingbox is that it works through the Mothership (a login to slingbox.com is required) and if they detect and restrict your country, then its a pita to work around probably requiring a VPN tunnel or something.

This all depends on the type of signal that's coming into your house. It looks like Synology with the HDHomerun will work, but they only appear to support the DVB-T version. What country are you in and who is your TV provider?

EDIT: Just saw you're in Canada. What kind of TV signal are you getting from your provider? You'll need to know that in order to know what kind of tuner you can connect.

Yes I am located in Canada. How can I figure out what signal I would be getting from my provider? Check out their website?

Yea i guess you dont need the remote potato if you use a Synology

Canada doesn't have cablecard so the Prime wouldn't work.

Cablecard? And you are referencing HDHomerun Prime?

this plus plex media server, you can stream to basically any client local and remote.

Would I be limited to Plex media server, or would I be able to use Synology Video Station?

Am I understanding this right with Sick Beard, I would download this to my Synology and SB will download any TV show as a Torrent? Without the need of hooking up a coaxe cable to my Synology?

I'm fairly sure the Prime uses the cable card only for decrypting so if the channels aren't encrypted you can use the Prime box. but regardless they may a non-cable card two tuner box that should work if the unecrypted cable formats are the same.
