I am stuck living in my parents garage and my god is it getting cold, i have been using this old oil heater my parents had and i am snuggled up next to the thing right next to my desk, well tonight i noticed that the oil heater just isnt enough for the cold weather now, so i went to wal-mart and bought a Digital Oscillating Ceramic Heater With Remote about an hour ago, and i have to say its really nice, and it seems alot better than that oil heater. well my dad wakes up to go to work and so i showed it to him and gets all annoyed and says the power bill is gonna go up like $200-$250 a month just from this little heater. the oil heater was 900-1500 watts and i had it on the 900 watt setting most of the time, well this new heater is 800-1500 watts and looks like im gonna have to use the 1500 watt setting til the room gets warmed up then i take it down to 800 watts. question is, is the oil heater that much better of a heater that it uses that less of power that this other style heater? i really dont want the bill to show up being that much higher and then have to pay for it, im trying to save money living here not spend it on heating my ass, lol
 
heh, I run 2 oil heaters, a fan heater and one of those oscilating thingies, its cheaper than heating a whole house the size of mine, and its really not that bad on the electric bill.
 
No offense, but your dad sounds like a real asshole. Sticking you in an unheated garage during the winter and won't let you use a decent heater? :confused: :mad:
 
wow where do u live tho? i live near seattle washington, power prices are kinda high here... know how many kilowatts u use per month?

lmao, yeah especially since he owns a HVAC company, but im 21 and should be glad my parents let me move back in period, im just trying to deal with the small things, my old room turned into an office when i moved out, but i really like the garage, we built a room in 1 of the 3 car garages, it just needs to be completely insulated and a nice vent from the furnace ran to here

Massachusetts, not sure but I remember factoring it, and it was cheaper to have personal heaters than heat a large victorian from the early 1900s
 
Where I live its about 17 cents per kilowatt hour I think (Con Ed is a ripoff like most companies around here). But if you can save that 100 watts, thats great, and if it feels warmer than the old heater because its newer and more efficient, well that's definitely the better choice.

I wonder why we haven't heard a Prescott-as-space-heater joke yet :D
 
I have a few oil heaters out in my shop and I kept them on last winter - my electric bill for the shop was 2x that of my home and my house is a two story beast. You need to stay warm, no doubt, but your dad is probably right about the electric bill.
