We host our own company e-mail server and need to temporarily shut it down. I'm wondering what will happen to incoming mail while the server is off-line. Is it stored on the internet somewhere or simply bounced back to the sender?
According to the spec, the sending servers should queue it and try again for up to a week ( I think, it may be as long as three days, I don't remember ).
If the email server is only down for a day or so, everything will trickle then flood in when it comes back up.
