Is there a free program out there that will write zeroes to the drive to ensure that no info can be taken from the drive if sold to another party?

I have heard that just deleting the partition and formatting are not enough. Is this true?
 
You can boot from UBCD and use Darik's boot-n-nuke. It is the DOD approved 2/5/more pass wiping method.

Burn to cd, boot to cd, go to HDD > Wiping > Darik's, should be fairly straight forward from there.
 
I like DBAN too, basically it writes 0 across the drive, then writes 1s, then another layer of 0, to tumble all data and eliminate residual magnetic fields from prior data.
 
Killdisk is good too, but if it's sensitive information pull the platters and apply adequate pressure with your favorite blunt object.

Unfortunately that's not a good way to resell to another party.
 
Well yeah, it just kind of depends on how sensitive the data is. As heavily unlikely as it is, data could be recovered from a 0'd drive. Unless what's on there could somehow be devastating to someone over-writing is fine. :)
