Performance Issue with 6800

For I don't know how long, my graphics card has been having some performance issues. It wasn't until just the other day that I ran a benchmark and saw it wasn't scoring how it should. All I did before then was play games. I've tried almost everything I can think of so far: reinstalled Forceware drivers, reinstalled chipset drivers, reformatted, changed power supply lines to the graphics card, ran just the core system components, messed with settings in applications, games, the motherboard BIOS, nothing. According to 3DMark01, my fillrates are where they should be. Clockspeed times pipelines = about the correct number. I even tried the card in my dad's computer, and it performed much more like it should, so I know the card itself is OK, and I know, since I reformatted, that it's not a software issue. Only thing I can think of is that the motherboard is acting up. Any suggestions?

The 6800 series blows ass if you have a second monitor hooked up. It also blows ass if you have tv-out hooked up. It also blows ass if you don't set your AGP aperture to around 256.

I took mine back, because I don't like putting up with this shit.

hope that isn't true... i use mine for gaming mostly and prolly hoping it helps visually make my movies better too.

It is true.

Thats why I posted it.

i haven't installed my 6800 yet. but i want to ask u something. did u think u might've gotten a bad card?

Where are you experiencing the performance loss and by how much?

Post all your 3dmark scores including 03/05. Also post in what game is the performance low and what kind of performance loss (stuttering, low fps). Lastly post your resolution in games and your AA/AF settings.

Three things could be affecting the performance loss, apperture size is not 256mb, you don't have enough memory, or your AA/AF resolution settings are too high.

My friend has the same exact computer as I do, but he has 512mb of ram, so on his 6800 he gets lots of choppiness in games because he runs out of ram and the swap file is so active. On my computer with the gig of ram, there is no choppiness what so ever.

Everyone should have a gig these days if you want things to be at it's smoothest.

provoko i have 512 ram currently. will i be experiencing lag as well? im about to get another 512 stick tho. how do u set the agp to 256 too? thanks

Depends on the game. But generally you will since you'll run out of physical ram and the swap file will have to go overactive. So any choppiness will be a computer issue and not a video issue.

The apperture size affects a small amount of games. It's only helped me in the nvidia demos especially timbury. I remember having 128mb of apperture size in timebury demo and I had 0-1 fps, so I put the apperture size to 256mb and I got somewhere between 40-70 fps or more.

The agp apperture size is in the bios.

Strange..I have set my AGP apture to 64 MB, and still get's 10071 in 3Dmark 03...
I can play games when I forget to turn off my clone-mode(Tv hooked up), witout noticing it...

Terracide - BS comes in all shape and sizes...

Yea, just goes to show you not everyone is the same. It's not very helpful when someone like KingPariah777 comes out and starts going off on something without even helping the person.

But when it comes to agp apperture size, don't keep it at 64, most likely you won't be able to run nvidia demos or any game thats like an nvidia demo. For me, apperture has never affected any game other than nvidia demos.

also make sure you have your chipset/AGP drivers installed for your mobo ;)
(hey it happens)

my aparture is at 64mb, and i get around 5300 in 3dmark05

Thanks for all the attention guys. :D

Are you overclocking the card and how big are the performance drops?
Yes and no. I've tried both overclocking with all 16 pipelines and 6 vertex shaders enabled, and I've also tried with all settings at stock. Performance is still way below where it should be.

I don't have a second monitor hooked up, nor am I using the TV-out. Also I disagree with that AGP aperture comment entirely.

I'm experiencing the performance loss in all games and benchmarks. Let me give you an example:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/Cybercat/Screenshots/6800_OC.jpg
That's what I used to get, 12 pipelines, 5 vertex shaders, with just overclocking.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/Cybercat/Screenshots/6800mod_420-940.jpg
This is the best I can do now. I've got all 16 pipelines and 6 vertex shaders enabled with slightly higher clockspeeds than before (more case fans).

Setting everything to stock speeds and pipelines/vertex shaders doesn't improve anything, it just makes the performance even lower. Before I'd get 4185 in 3DMark05 with just overclocking; now I get 4078 with overclocking AND unlocking all pipelines and vertex shaders. As I said earlier, I tried the card in my dad's computer, and performance was much more acceptable, so I know the card itself isn't the problem.

Right now, because of this performance problem, I'm not running any AA or AF. I keep the resolution at 1024x768. So the amount of memory on my card is not the issue, as this performance loss affects all settings regardless.

Halo for PC and 3DMark benchmarks luckily do not require 1GB of RAM to run smoothly. My dad's computer only has 512MB of RAM, and like I said, the card performed much more acceptably in his machine. Besides, memory swapping happens for a brief second every once in a while, it shouldn't affect overall performance like this.

I've tried many chipset drivers in trying to solve this problem. I've tried nForce 5.10, 4.27, 4.24, and the latest one from Abit's website. None of them make any difference. I've also tried different Forceware drivers, which didn't fix anything either.

I had the same problem with halo, missing textures etc, the fix is to go into your display settings, set everything to highest quality, the textures will load in, then you can go back and set your setings to whatever you want..

Try disagreeing with it after running nVidia's Mermaid demo with a 64 meg aperture

I couldn't care less for nVidia's demos, I didn't get my 6800Gt to watch demos, I got it to play games...
But we are all different :)

The Tech Report had some tips on how to cure this at one point.

P.S. To the poster of the thread, I think this isn't a graphics card or overclocking problem. I'd guess there's a process running in the background eating RAM or CPU cycles.

Well, I had tried reinstalling Windows, then reformatting, so if there was any virus it would be long-gone by now. Thanks for your help though. The more contributed the better. :)

BTW, my card had been performing beautifully with 128MB aperture setting.

as my hd is now dead, i can't test this, so could someone benchmark using either 3dmark03 or 05, and also a gpu intensive game like d3 or hl2 or both using everything the same settings except comparing agp aperatures of 64, 128, and 256? also, maybe, one of the nvidia demos? that would probably help clear up that problem, as well as enlighten us.
thx

 Use your brain.

You run the demo to determine if there is something fundamentally wrong with your card. NVidia's demos are MADE to run well on that card. If it doesn't, then that means there is something WRONG.

But whatever, play your games and keep wondering whats wrong.

KingPariah777 is right, a little harsh but right. But enough with AGP apperture size, talking about that is technically threadjacking. If you want to argue about the relevance of AGP apperture size, start your own post.

Back to topic: Cybercat, I don't think anythings wrong. You just mentioned that you got 4185 in 3dmark05, well I get 4153 in 3dmark05..... that's the normal score for our processors with an overclocked 6800. What exactly are you complaining about? Low FPS, stuttering, what?

If you're complaining about low FPS then post your 3dmark03 score and other game FPS and compare them. If the scores don't match, then we know theres a problem, if they match, then there isn't a problem.

If you were expecting more, you have to keep in mind that websites usually review video cards with amd 64bit fx-55 chips at 260fsb which gives an incredible boost in FPS especially when it comes to 3dmark scores.

I've tried messing with different AGP aperture sizes yesterday and it made no difference.

Provoko, 4185 is what I used to score. That was with 12p5v at 420/920 I believe. Now, I enable all 16p6v along with the overclocking, I'm scoring lower than I used to. If I leave it at 12p5v, I score even lower than that.

I'm thinking this is an issue with my motherboard. I have isolated different parts of the computer, and I know that's not a software issue, not a power supply issue, and not a graphics card issue. All those things are fine. It must be my motherboard.

Thanks for your help guys.

I'm confused. You used to get that score, when and how? Also, what's your current score with 12p5v 420/920? I'm on 12p5v 404/869 with 67.02.

I FOUND THE PROBLEM!

It was the latest version of FRAPS, if you can believe it. If it's running when you load a game or benchmark, it will lower the framerate considerably. I have to close it, run the game for a second without FRAPS, then open it again. It was the weirdest thing... I'm now running an older version of FRAPS that works much better.

Anyway, I'm so happy I got it fixed. Thanks for all your help everyone!
