Okay, I've got a few choices on what I can buy next for my comp, and I was looking for suggestions. My current system is:
MSI 845e Max2 Mobo
P4 2.53ghz
2x 512 PC3200 DDR400
Gainward Geforce4 TI-4600
SB Audigy
Primary IDE: Master WD 250gb 8mb Cache / Slave WD 120gb
8mb Cache
Secondary IDE: Master Optorite DD0401 DVD+/-RW
I'm planning on replacing the mobo and processor with a Asus P4P800 Deluxe and a P4 3.0C ghz processor. However, this also opens other avenues of upgrade for me. Here are the options:
1.) 2x 36 GB SATA Raptors in Raid0
2.)1x 74GB SATA Raptor
3.)New video card (Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb or 256mb)
So, obviously, a video card is going to give me the best performance increase, especially for gaming. However, here is the situation - I was originally planning on purchasing a new video card either when the next gen cards come out (and these go down in price), or when HL2 / Doom3 comes out. So, for sure, I will be getting a new video card. So I guess the question is whether or not it is worth it to get the Raptors, either in Raid0 or just a single raptor.
I had thought that raid0 gives a noticeable performance increase, especially with 2 raptors, but the latest posts I've read say otherwise, so now I am skeptical on whether it is worth it to get them.
As for video card, if I do get the video card, what are the differences in the 9800 Pro 128mb and 256 mb models? Are there significant differences in performance between the two models?
This computer is my college computer, and it is used for gaming, however, I also do a significant amount of digital imaging/web design, programming (that requires no cpu I know), and file sharing on a local college network (not illegal). This is in addition to the typical amount of educational computer use, internet browsing research, chat, etc, but that really doesn't require much anyway.
I'm open to any suggestions/comments, just leave a msg here.
Thanks in advance,
Kevin
