Performance hit with onboard audio

In the latest [H]ardOCP motherboard review, as in all of the other reviews, has a graph showing the performance hit associated with turning on the sound in 2 games.
If one were to use a sound card instead of the onboard audio, would the performance hit not be as great?
This seems to be the implication, but HardOCP hasn't ever done such a test to my knowledge.

It is known that it is better to get all of the expansion cards possible, and turn off all of the MB features you can....On expansion cards you have processors on there taking the load off your CPU......The two main ones being Sound and Graphics...Hope this helps
