Performance hit from IDE emulation?

Hi,

I recently bought myself a new system with a 1 TB Caviar Black HDD from WD. Up until now I have been running it using the IDE mode instead of AHCI. Is that plain stupid? I run it that way because I like XP and had no troubles installing it (I don't have a floppy drive). Would I see a notable performance increase when switching to AHCI?

Note that as far as I know, that HDD does not have NCQ. I tested the sequential transfer rate in Linux using hdparm -Tt /dev/sda, it came out as 110 MB/s. However I don't know if the random access performance is OK, since I don't know how to measure that.

Any input is appreciated
 
When you hit the ide performance problem caused by the os using the generic ide drivers instead of the achi drivers you get less than 5MB/s or that is what I have seen.. 110 MB/s looks normal for a current generation sata drive.
 
XP doesn't support AHCI; XP is a 10 years old, ancient OS.

IDE would mean you don't have NCQ and hot-plug support. SSDs use NCQ to allow for command buffering/queueing, so that wouldn't work in IDE mode. You would get normal single-disk performance in most cases though.
