I recently bought myself a new system with a 1 TB Caviar Black HDD from WD. Up until now I have been running it using the IDE mode instead of AHCI. Is that plain stupid? I run it that way because I like XP and had no troubles installing it (I don't have a floppy drive). Would I see a notable performance increase when switching to AHCI?
Note that as far as I know, that HDD does not have NCQ. I tested the sequential transfer rate in Linux using hdparm -Tt /dev/sda, it came out as 110 MB/s. However I don't know if the random access performance is OK, since I don't know how to measure that.
