Considering current build in sig and soon i'll get a gtx460, does it worth getting a quad cpu? what is the average (%) gain i will get? Main and most important thing i do, gaming, so it's WoW (so cpu eater ppl say), gta and future titles...

I have in mind a complete new system with i7, if what mentioned above will not be much noticiable to worth throw money into.

Not sure about WoW, but GTA really loves quad-cores. At this point though, it might be worth waiting for Sandy Bridge in Jan - even if you don't get a Sandy Bridge chip, you'll be able to score some great deals on older i5/i7 stuff.

yep people will be dumping their i7's for cheap and now is a great time
to buy a 1156 or 1366 setup.

Sitting on a dead platform, this close to release of a new platform, I'd save money to go to the new socket.

Yeah, that's another option, seeing sandy is around the corner, but what about prices? any idea of how much they will be for?

They are coming out with i5's and low end i7's so along the $125-$300 mark.

Honestly all depends what you are using the cpu for. Get qx9650 and good cooler and overclock the hell out of that cpu and you should be able to have a good system for another year or 2. By then i7 really be dirt cheap.

Yes, the step from duo core to quad core would be noticeable, even on the same platform.

But if Sandy Bridge is as cost competitive as it appears they will be, it'd be awful hard to justify the qx9650 just to buy in cheaper into what will be the back end of the market 2 years from now.

Honestly this close to new architecture, it's worth waiting and saving a few dollars regardless of the system platform you choose to run with.

find a used Q6600 G0 and overclock it to 3.4-3.6. Can find them pretty dang cheap now a days. That'll hold you over for a while till building a new system.

I would just stay with what you have until Sandy Bridge comes out in a few months.,

That Sandybridge does seem a good reason to hold out for a little while until it comes out. Hang in there!

There is a huge temptation to buy a core i5/i7 CPU this holiday season and don't be carried away by the sale prices. Get past this one month (December) temptation and look forward to Sandybridge in January :)

Isnt sandybridge ment to replace the 1156 socket? Not the X58. Will there be that much of a preformance gain by going with sandybridge then with the X58?

i dont remember where i saw this but sandy bridge should be faster and scale to higher ghz but faster than i7 I'm not sure. the system in your sig is pretty beefy.

i think the greatest perf increase is with games that benefit from more cores, I'm hoping for an 8 core desktop chip

Sandy Bridge will "not" be that much faster than the current i7. The big difference will be the integrated graphics if we are talking about head to head improvements. Yes the pipeline will be longer and they added some improvements to the instruction set yadda yadda yadda.

Sandy Bridge will be a mainstream part, the real enthusiast part will arrive with Ivy Bridge.

The question is........can you hold out that long as we are talking Q4 2011.

I don't know - the Anand preview said it was something like 20% clock for clock, plus higher speeds. I believe that was against i7s, but definitely against the high i5s.
