Performance difference between PC and iBook

I'm trying to sell my PC here . You can see the specs there as well. Using that money (if someone buys it), I'm planning on purchasing a 12" iBook G4 with 512 MB RAM. I wanted to know what performance differences I would notice between the two.

This is what I do on a day-to-day basis:
1. homework (I will probably use iWork for this)
2. web editing
3. whatever iLife can do
4. chatting (I will use xchat aqua and ichat for this)
5. simple photoshop work

Thanks! Please tell people about the PC that I'm selling. I REALLY want to get a mac.

for what you are going to be doing it will be fine....I will let you know that some things will feel a little slower because of the video card...you will be coming from a 256 Meg card and going to a 32 Meg card...it is a BIG difference...other than that I think it would be fine

What can you say about the performance in Photoshop CS of a Mac mini w/ the 1.42ghz g4, 1gb ram, 80gb hd versus a Pentium 4 outfit? Roughly what P4 GHZ equivalent would you say this system will be running at?

Looking to buy a new system for the campus photography club and have $1000-1200 to blow on a system w/o monitor. That and we want to get something with a 3yr warranty and the applecare on the mini is very cheap with educational discount. We also like how much more secure OS X is, and that for the most part club members can't screw around with getting viruses/spyware and more by installing and downloading stupid stuff.

I am currently a PC user, as are all the execs of the club. I am in the process of getting my own Mac, but that won't be for a few months so I can't just test it out myself. As such we are just trying to get a Photoshop performance # in wintel, as this is what we know ourselves.

Accessories/Peripherals hooked up to it will be an Epson 1280, Wacom Intuos 3 9x12, and Epson 4870 scanner. It will be hooked up to a 17" Trinitron.

thanks

That depends entirely on what you're doing. Most people I've spoken to say a single 1.4GHz G4 "feels" about as fast as a >3GHz Pentium 4 in Photoshop, if they both have the same amount of RAM. If you run some PSbenches, the Pentium will definitely be faster, but I suppose it is possible that the Mac version just feels smoother.

You won't get speed blind from a Mac mini or iBook, but they're not slouches at all. When I used my mother's 800MHz (I think) iBook G4, I never, not once, noticed a slow-down of any kind. Launching applications was fairly quick, surfing was very smooth, even Photoshop ran without a hitch, even on fairly high-resolution images (I helped with some images for a book, so we're talking print resolution images).

Just don't expect either to run WoW at the highest settings. ;)

Speaking of WoW and iBooks, I just bought a new desktop PC a few months ago and am looking at at iBook within the next 6 months for school and a bit of WoW on the WiFi on campus.

Can the cheapest iBook (12") with 512 RAM and the 32 meg ATi gfx card run WoW AT ALL (low settings but smooth framerate)? Is it possible to customize the iBook to get the Powerbook's Mobility Radeon 9700 on it?

Thanks.

given your tasks, the iBook looks like an excellent option. keep us posted.

I bought an iBook to replace my PC. (Becuase I was going on deployment and needed a laptop)

anyway, I love it... Best purchase I ever made (honestly).. it will be fine for what you are doing, and even more...

However saying that... I cant wait to get my PC back in my hands with all this deployment money :)

We kept telling you to just buy the freaking iBook for how long? A few months? ;) Glad to see you're happy with it.
