Performance difference between 2:6 and 2:8 memory divider?

Exactly what the thread topic implies. Is there any difference in the performance of the system between 1200mhz DDR3 and 1600mhz DDR3 if the CPU is clocked the same?
 
Yes. A 400mhz drop in speed will probably end up making many applications noticeably slower.
 
is there a benchmark i can run that will show this performance discrepancy?
 
Are you mostly going to be gaming? If so, try some tests in game. If not, there are some generic benchmarks that will show memory speed, but they won't tell you if you're going to see a difference in real-world applications.

Why are you even considering running your memory at such a low speed? With the setup in your signature, you should be able to run 4ghz on the CPU and still maintain 1600mhz memory. I have the same board, CPU, and 1600mhz memory, and I am running the RAM at 1600mhz with 4ghz on the CPU.
 
There's an article about memory scaling on i7. Some applications do benefit from higher memory speeds, but in real life the benefits are not so significant.

because I am running 211 x 19 and going to 200 x 20 requires more vcore. with the RAM rated at 1600 I'd have to OC the RAM too

thanks for the link. it seems like if i have to loosen the timings the gain in bandwidth would be offset.

That is a weird situation. I had to adjust my vcore except down a few clicks because it could run at lower-than-stock speeds. Are you sure all your board voltages are set correctly? I wouldn't imagine the change in multi requiring different cpu voltage for the same overall mhz.

does anything look awry to you? all I know is my computer won't even POST at 200 x 20 yet will be LinX and Prime95 stable at 211 x 19.

the DRAM may look off but it is set to 1.65 in BIOS.
 
Yeah AT had the same conclusion that happened for AMD users during the A64 days. Sure 1:1 is great, but as long as you're getting a decent CPU clock rate OC, the IMC will take care of you regardless of your latencies or divider. I mean, if the max is something like 4% in real world (and probably less in games) - then yeah there you go. FTR, I got a 1600C8 kit, but I drop it down to cas 9; it's more for RAM headroom than anything else though.

My kit was $89 at the time, which is about mid-range...Newegg managed to increase the price to $109 now though lol. Bottom line - if you're on a Nehalem, it's not worth buying a new kit just for that. Bumping your GPU or CPU clocks will have a bigger difference.

hofan41 - I think that's more to do with the odd multis (19 or 21) doing better than 20.
