Performance Diff. on Upgrade

I was just wondering If I were to upgrade to say amd 64 3800+ 90nm Rev. E and either the 7800gtx or next ATI, would I notice a significant speed difference in games and general computing at on my 17" lcd 1280x1024. I play alot of games and just use the computer alot in general. Im waiting for the next ATI card before I make an mobo/cpu and vid card upgrade. I plan on hopefully selling my card for around $250 this summer if I upgrade and spending approx. 800 dollars net (~1000 before selling card). Would this be a good upgrade option? or should i go for like a 4000+.
 
from my experience with playing with my athlon xp 3200 vs my athlon 64 3200+ @ stock.. the a64 KILLSSSSSSSSSS the AXP in CS:S at any rsolution/settings... and about the videocard.... any 6800gt+ or x800xt+ would be perfect for you at 1280x1024 right now..... but if you want to keep playing at that res. on newer games.. a 7800gtx or whatever ati has then would let you play at that res. with high settings longer than a 6800/x800 card would :)
 
thanks for the input, right now i will have had my aXP 3000 for 2 years in october and with the next big games like quake 4 and unreal 3, I'll prolly want a higher cpu. For me, I really dont see anypoint of going any higher than 1280x1024 with AA/AF as compared to 1600x1200 with AA/AF as you prolly wont be able to see much different in quality as far as jagged edges and what not. Textures should look the same. My question is, should I save money and go with the 3800 Rev E venice as compared to the clawhammer 4000+ and get the next gen nvidia or ATI. How long should that upgrade to my machine last me?
 
What i did was get a 'stop gap' mobo (A64 754) to get me over the FPS hump that was limiting me with the AXP system i had until i decide to go full out S939.
 
if you upgrade with the next gen ati/nvidia it will last you ageeeeees...but if you want a better cpu id get a X2, but if u dont have the money a 3800 will do fine for a year or two
