Is the performance boost between a SATA I and II driver noticable?

Nope, no single drive can saturate a sata 1 connection at 150MB/s yet. Though with some of the sata 2 additional standards, NCQ, and what not, under heavy load you might get better access times but this wouldn't be something you'd notice in day to day use.

The data I've seen on 7K500 suggests that its buffer bandwidth has been dramatically improved over past drives, allowing it to better use 3gbps SATA than other drives. However, 7K500 hasn't been through a good review yet, at least not that I'm aware of, so this could be smoke and mirrors.

Of course, when the transfer occurs from the actual disk media, 3gbps is pointless for a single drive.
