Is there any difference in performance with the SMP client between 1 stick (single channel) and dual sticks (dual channel) DDR2?

Also, is there a difference if you use faster memory and overclock?

You will notice a difference, often in the order of 100-300 extra ppd when going with dual-channel, more than memory speed itself.

If you have a choice of 1 stick of DDR2-800 and 2 sticks of DDR2-667, the latter is obviously the better choice.

Cool!

The 2 diskless boxen I have are running 1 1gb stick each and I was thinking of going with 2 512mb instead (the memory needs to be replaced one way or the other, since it's the memory for my main rig I'm building ;))

thanks for the info!

Be careful by limiting to 1 Gb. Some new SMP WU like 2619 eat a lot of memory and will choke systems with 1 Gb or under ;)

Yeah, but I'm cheap :p:D

Just bought CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X1024-6400C4 for $24.99 with free shipping

I guess that is where I am different. I know a Q6600 with 2x512 is pushing it memory wise and I prefer 4GB but will settle for 2GB which leaves room for those memory hungry work units. I hate having to buy a 2nd set or replace something because I skimped on a $20 difference up front when in the long run I'll have to buy twice... That make sense? I guess what I am saying is I prefer, within reason, putting a slight amount of future proofing into my systems.

Exactly, think forward and you will save in the long run.

Totally understand where your coming from. I guess it comes from the fact that I don't have a ton to spend on boxen, so I try to put them together as cheap as possible. I don't plan on upgrading these 2 new ones until quad cores are down to $50-60. i just can't justify paying that much...especially to wifey :D

That makes sense and in the long run the smaller outlays, although they may cost more in the long run appear to be less painful to the wifey I am sure.

:) Regardless I think it boils down to doing as much as you can with what you have or can afford.

You can also get good deals if you're willing to wait for the MIR. Like right now tigerdirect has 2gigs of corsair xms DDR2-800 for like 29 plus shipping after rebate. I love how cheap ram is right now.

I thought setting your available memory would stop the issue was a WU asking for too much memory?

Normally yes, but there have been some new WUs, I believe the 2619s, that have consumed larger amounts of memory than the client's configuration. This is an issue that Stanford is aware of and will address.

Correct, there is a problem with the server still assigning 2619 WU to machines with under 1024 MB of RAM.♥Even if we do everything to avoid them, the server ignore them and still push them...

Not only does p2619 need 1 Gb to fold on, it also runs better on my Opterons.
I'm getting ~2,660 PpD with p2619 on my 285's vs ~2,400 Ppd with p2653.
My X5355's are down to only ~3,000 PpD, probably due to the memory bus being overloaded.
So it looks like getting faster memory may pay off if protiens like p2619 become common.

Luck .......... :D

I don't know about the P2619 but the P3062 also runs better on AMD hardware. It flies on socket-A, relatively speaking.

Wonder if Phenoms will work great with those WU ?

If that's the case, I'm tempted to buy 1 box with a Phenom X4 just for those cases and equilibrate the PPD.

EDIT : It's also the kind of things which make us wonder why Nehalem is taking the time. With the integrated memory controller, I bet they will get thru those WU like hot knife on butter.

I would be interested, just to see a comparison

I'm also very interested in Dunnington with 6 cores and 16MB of L3 cache. It should be a very compelling platform.
