I am trying to setup a single machine to run both ESX and Hyper-V. I have a old PERC 5i sitting around and decided to setup a basic RAID 5 with 3 SATA drives to hold the VMs. I have a ASUS Z97 Sabertooth Mark 2 mobo with a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot. I insert the PERC card and turn on the machine it never comes up and keeps booting, no error messages. I think PERC 5i is a PCIe 1.0 card, but the interface should be backward compatible. Any ideas on what I may be missing here.
 
Yes, you might have to block off a few of the pins on the PCI-E connector for it to work on certain Intel motherboards.

With PERC 5i, it has been hot and miss for me blocking out those pins/pads. Doing allows the machine to boot, but the controller scribbles data making the array useless. Then again, some combos just work.
 
You got it. That was my next question. I masked those pins and I am able to get it up and running and it looks like my memory is shot. There was a message that there was a bit error during the last boot. I am sure I can find another one in ebay or somewhere, but do we know what else could be the downside to the array itself. This will serve as my lab machine, but if it corrupts the data often, that could get be a real pain.
 
They are pretty old at this point, and run very hot, so you need cooling on it as well.

Why not go with a PERC6i card?
They have all of the issues of the PERC5 cards fixed, and have a few other advantages, plus they aren't nearly as old.

They can be found fairly cheap, and if you can, get one with a BBU, unless of course you are running your system on an UPS.
