Hello, all!

I am looking to purchase a couple of servers that have the Perc5i RAID controller in them.

Two questions:
1. It sounds like you can have SATA and SAS drivers connected to the same controller... Is this correct? I would like to have 1 RAID1 array with 2x SAS drives, and 1x RAID1 array with 2x SATA drivers. Is this possible?
2. How does the Perc5i handle RAID1 arrays? I've read online that some controllers are set up so that if you just pull one of the drives from a RAID 1 array and drop it into another computer, it'll be able to read the data, but some other controllers are set up differently. Is this the way the Perc5i works?

I had a PERC5i go on the fritz and so I bought another one since they are like $30 on eBay. It recognized the array as foreign or what ever term it uses. Just had to import it and it was working again. This was on a 5x2TB RAID5 array, no data loss. I did make sure to label everything so it went to the same ports.

As far as the mixing I do not know I only used SATA. There is a company that sells x4 SATA breakout cables on Amazon for ~$10. I had two and they were great.

Oh if, at least with RAID5, if you want to expand the array you can, but you have to switch between versions of LSI software. I think the order was that the newer software is better overall but the older one does online expansion. It was called expansion wizard or something. Anyways that utility is not available in the newer versions of the LSI MegaRAID software.

I was very satisfied with the PERC5, I only got rid of it because of the 2TB limit.
 
I would toss the Perc5, it's so outdated there are several better solutions, namely software RAID.
 
did a Google search and it seems to be possible according to a few people... But personally I also would prefer to upgrade that controller unless this server is not going to be used for anything where you need maximum reliability and/or performance and/or disk space (since with LSI cards you need 6Gbps support or better to use >2TB drives -- not a SATA/SAS limitation, just an LSI limitation)
