I have my own theories on why people are spending less time on social media apps but I really want to hear what you guys think the reasons are. Burn out? Less interest? Less time? Pushed away?

The company compared Android users' daily time spent on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat from January to March 2016 with the same period in 2015. The firm looked at data from the U.S, UK, Germany, Spain, Australia, India, South Africa, Brazil and Spain. Facebook's Instagram saw the biggest year-over-year drop — usage was down 23.7 percent this year, closely followed by Twitter (down 23.4 percent), Snapchat (down 15.7 percent) and Facebook (down 8 percent), the study found.

What exactly is a social media app? This and maybe 2 other similar forums is as social as I get. This isn't an app though, just a website.

It only measured Android devices.

I watched a woman run over an old man in Costco the other day because she was on Facebook on her iPhone.

I told her to see a shrink.

She didn't even apologise to the poor guy, just rolled her eyes at me and moved on. Still on her phone.

If I see an iPhone out in public, very seldom is it not on Facebook.

I'd love to see numbers from all platforms. Facebook slefie-spamming twats, much like the iPhone.

Yes, I generalise. It's fun.

I use Facebook to connect with relatives I haven't seen or talked to in years. I have a very short friends list of mostly cousins and other family members. A couple people from work, all in all about 120 people. Also talk to my parents and sister pretty regularly through Facebook messager. It's easy for them since all they have are iPads. That's about the extent. I might post something on there 6 times a year maybe?

My wife though........ Damn

Those users switched it an iOS device, that is why the decline.

I stopped using them altogether because of the election. Facebook seems to be a toxic place with all kinds of extremism from every view out there. Fucking done with that shit and this election.

I just wonder what the next popular "trend" they have moved on to. Not that I care, I would just like to know what to avoid :p

Social media is only good for someone looking to get laid. For anyone else the stuff there is either AT your iq level or every second spent there dropping yours TO that level.

Instagram. Twitter. Tumblr. Facebook. Myspace. All of that in which you create an account and follow people (or friend them) and have people follow you. Hence "social" media.

Even news aggregates like Reddit, Fark and Digg can be considered social media in a way.

People are getting sick of everyone else's shit.

I can be more specific, I think...

What's causing social media decline? Crap. Spam in the form of fake follows, people begging for likes and more follows, quantity in content rather than quality filled with irrelevant hash tags just to maximize visibility. Instead of having a small group of people occasionally posting in which you find interesting and being able to check some keywords for other related interesting content... you get some people who "play the game" in order to seem as successful at social media as the rest of these twats polluting the internet. Instead of low volume quality content, it's high volume garbage. The signal to noise ratio drops, the people who weren't part of the problem get annoyed with it and leave... leaving you with even less people posting content that was interesting or relevant to your use of the app.

Had a pretty thorough discussion about this the other day. Once social media hits critical mass to be known by name recognition alone.... that tends to be the decline for the quality of the content for it. Usually by the time something becomes a household name... that's when corporations jump in and fill it with ads and telemetry... further reducing the actual value (to the user) of the site.

May be people can get back to normal lives now and live on. Hopefully people will start looking at their surroundings once again and Possibly we can get true electable candidates and not criminals.

Very unlikely considering last nights result.

That shit is everywhere. I'm tired of it!

went from social media to data collection to way too much advertising

The fad is subsiding, I don't think social media is going away but people are definitely going to use it less.

This is exactly what I believe investing in Snapchat is a bad idea. One day people will start dropping Snapchat on mass (like they did with AIM, ICQ, MSN Messager and to a lesser extent Skype). People get tired of unnecessary services eventually.

Agreed.

Most people I know have 400-2k "friends", I had a total of 68, this included family, but were people I talk to every day or at least once a week in person, it kept the BS and drama to a minium. But even after a while it started to get annoying, I kept it for a long time just to keep track of events and the like, I will admit, I LOVED the event side of it, being able to set them up or join them (I do automotive events allot), but it was just not worth it and 2 months ago I deleted my FB account, the last one outside of LinkedIn that I have. Even now, LinkedIn is becoming less and less professional and people are posting personal crap like on FB, really starting to wonder if I should even keep LinkedIn around.

my thoughts exactly. My wife spends a lot of time on it though, she likes to cyberstalk people. She loves gossip stuff *eyeroll*

As people get older, their social connections get smaller. About a good 90% of the people I was friends with in High School and College I really don't talk to anymore. The younger generation doesn't use Facebook and look to other social media platforms. Instagram is "in" now and Snap Chat is the next new hotness.

I wish my wife would lay off the stuff. Why is it women are drawn to it like a magnet.

I believe it is because most females like to gossip about other people and events. Social media lets them do it on a global scale.

They can become personalized soap operas for them.

Never got into the Socialists media. They don't believe in privacy and they like to control what you see and hear.

Sums up my experience exactly. We have indeed had a few fights about it. On the phone during a movie, someone asks me something at work about how our weekend was "how was fishing?", an I'm all like waaaat? Were you there too? Did I miss you? Nope, it was on your wifes FB page. Oh. I don't use that ##DFG. I hate Mark Z, let me tell you a little bit about him...

I seem to use Facebook and Twitter these days as a "personalized" news aggregator. This means I scroll through the feeds/timelines, see interesting articles/links posted by friends, and read them. I rarely post things and I rarely care about other people's statuses because I already talk to my actual close friends on a daily basis using actual conversation.

So yeah, I spend more time in the sites linked to than I do on the social media platform itself.

The reason social media time is down?

People are starting to realie that taking pictures with happy faces and posting them online..... doesn't actually make them happy.

Ive had people tell me im lame now because i dont "do" anything anymore. I ask them why they say that because i do plenty of things outside of home/work and they say "Because i never see you post on facebook what youve done" facemeetpalm.gif
I use FB just to browse through the bs that pops up on my news feed out of boredom or to talk to other car people in groups. But i dont really add anymore pictures, my profile picture is me on a ski trip two years ago, and i think posting what im doing with a picture is pretty lame because its just you saying to everyone "hey guys look what im doing, my life is better than yours because im doing cool stuff while you sit at home looking at my picture" Or the losers who post a youtube video of a song that describes how they feel, or when people post political memes as if your opinion is going to sway mine because you posted a dank meme.

Facebook is literally cancer now, its either crappy vines, political memes, stories of "10 things you wont believe, number 4 will shock you!", food recipe videos. Ever since they added the "so and so liked this" "so and so shared this" to the news feed its been terrible. All i really cared to see was original content from my friends, not some stupid video that they shared.

Yup, same at my house. Except for one rule that I made . . . only my dog can actually have a Facebook page and only pictures and information about the dog can be posted or her computers will disappear.

Works fine, my dog has the highest Candy Crush score of any canine AFAIK. :)

My wife is a red haired beautiful Irish woman. I'm lucky to bed her every night. If she wants facebook, I don't care. As long as I get the scraps.

Yup.. this is exactly what happens to every "tech" now. To understand my meaning.. just replace the words "social media" with anything.. and you'll see the reality is exactly the same. For example.. i've claimed exacxly what you say here for the decline in "computers and the internet" in general. i.e. it was way more cool before it became mainstream and ruined by morons that THINK they know what they're doing/saying but really don't as well as what you say by companies coming in and giving less and taking more (i'm looking at you software). (we've all seen these types... the ones that think they understand something but clearly the statement they just made proves they do not as it can't be more incorrect. e.g. Windows 10's download doesn't count towards your internet quota when it auto updates/downloads. was one i heard a few weeks ago. had to bite my tongue and just not bother to correct it).

PS. I don't have a FecesBook account.
