Is there any info on the turion yet? Anyone besides hp make them yet? Im looking for a laptop similar to the asus z71v with a turion mainly. Just wonder if i should go ahead with the z71v if the turion isnt anything over the PentiumM.

Turion is AMD's half-assed attempt to compete with the Pentium M. It just sucks, it runs hotter, uses more power, and ends up being SLOWER than its normal AMD 64 counterpart. All, AMD did to make Turion was get a desktop CPU and give it a power saving feature. Akin to the Intel Pentium 4m (which was a Desktop CPU with speedstep). The Pentium M is loosely based off the Tualatin Pentium 3s which were faster clock for clock than a Willamette P4 (hence why Intel no longer makes the Tualatin P3). When Intel created the Centrino package they were going for all areas of the system that need power management. They designed an accompaning Core-logic and Wireless card specifically for notebooks in addition to the Pentium M CPU. AMD's problem other than just modifying desktop chips is their lack of first party core-logic. AMD instead relies on third party manufacturers to make core-logic chipsets for their CPUs. It's fantastic in the desktop market. But in the notebook sector not even nVidia seems very interested in making a chipset solely for that market. What ends up happening is even though the CPU is intended for a notebook, the ODMs making the machines are using Desktop core-logic with a modified BIOS in a notebook thus sacrificing battery life again.

Yes, the Pentium M does not support intel's 64 bit instruction set...and won't until around next year. But right now 64bit is just a gimmick in my opinion as there has yet to be a killer app for it. At least in my book, I never was the early adopter type.

And before you start calling me an Intel Whore, AMD Rigs in my house outnumber the Intel rigs 3 to 1. Soon to be 4 to 1 once I get my AMD64 3200+ and 6800GT.

yeah pentium M Vs turion, there is no comparison, the Pentium M beats the turion out BUT! the turion is CHEAPER, which means the cost of pentium Ms will be dropping. also the AMD X2 cpus slaughter any chip intel has for cheaper and less heat, intel blows for desktops and succeeds in the laptop market but only slightly

the power note is somewhat inaccurate for the highest end CPU's this was taken off notebook forums

Total System Power Consumption - Idle:

Pentium-M 2.7GHz O/C (865PE): 118W
Pentium-M 2.13GHz (865PE): 111W
Pentium-M 2.0GHz (865PE): 110W
Turion 64 2.0GHz O/C (NF3250GB): 97W
Turion 64 1.8GHz (NF3250GB): 97W
Turion 64 1.6GHz (NF3250GB): 96W

Total System Power Consumption - Full Load:

Pentium-M 2.7GHz O/C (865PE): 143W
Pentium-M 2.13GHz (865PE): 127W
Pentium-M 2.0GHz (865PE): 125W
Turion 64 2.0GHz O/C (NF3250GB): 130W
Turion 64 1.8GHz (NF3250GB): 128W
Turion 64 1.6GHz (NF3250GB): 123W

the thing to note there is the power delta's.

also, thats a desktop scenario. a laptop, idle, realistically gets as low as 8 watts. (6 if you use external monitor)

Yeah, those power figures were measured with each CPU in a desktop board with Desktop components. Highly inaccurate compared to what you'll see in a Laptop.
