Pentium M?

I was thinking about building a cube computer and I was considering a AMD 64 and now people are throwin' me off with those pentium m's? Why would you put in a pentium m?

They run cooler, and get crazy overclocks. They are just as fast as the 64's and can beat them in some cases. I prefer the PM over the P4/A64, but I like the X2's over the Core-Duo's. The only issue w/ the PM's is that they aren't 64bit.

Where can you buy one and are they expensive?
I was actually thinking about Celeron m mabey. Why? Because I'm broke

Yeah, I think, I'll try the celeron m. This is my first build and I've only got $350
I saw some good deals on the celeon m on ebay

nooooooo!!! for $350 you could do a whole lot better than a celeron m. is that $350 for the entire system or just a the cpu/mobo?

Might want to start browsing the For Sale section of the forum. It won't be the latest hardware, but you can score some deals that will fit your budget.

Sorry, I just meant the computer its self (cpu, mobo. hdd, cdrom, RAM, case, ect)

If you want to build a good performer on the cheap I suggest you look at a 400fsb Pentium M or Celeron M. Benchmark comparisons show the same performance from both chips. The only benefit of the Pentium is the larger L2 and Enhanced Speedstep (which is useless on a desktop).

If you shop in the 1.6-1.7GHz 400FSB range you can find one for about $100(Celeron)-$200(Pentium). Pinmod and the chipset will recognize it as a 533MHz FSB 2.13-2.26GHz giving you performance comparable to a P4 3.4 or FX-55 or so in the gaming department. Compare that to buying a 2.26GHz 533FSB PM which is more than 2x your budget.

I have a P-M setup. I got my cpu (a dothan 730) for 95$ used. Someone on anandtech is doing the same, good price.

I have 5 Pentium/Celeron-M setups running right now. The difference between the Celeron-M and the Pentium-M is nonexistent for my usage. No more than 5-10% difference at the same clock speeds, and the Celerons actually come out pretty much even because of the better FSB overclocking I've gotten. For example, a Celeron-M 350J(1.3Ghz) running slightly over 2Ghz(13x160fsb) is about equal to a real Pentium-M 2Ghz(15x133). The 350J cost me under $30, the P-M was $175.

I also just got a Celeron-M 380(1.6GHz) system up and running last night. 2.3Ghz(145fsb) at default voltage ain't too bad for a $40 CPU and $7 heatsink. Also a better overclock than I've gotten from any P-M 725 since most of those are the older B0 Dothan core and the Celeron-M is a C1 like the 533MHz bus P-Ms.

Best of both worlds? Search out a P-M 710 or 715 which are 2MB cache 1.4Ghz and 1.5Ghz. Should hit 2.2GHz easily and the lower multiplier allows a higher bus overclock. They're also on the low end of the price scale, ~$50. Just have to make sure it's a Dothan, there are many more Banias 1.4Ghz and 1.5GHz chips than Dothans.

@ Widefault

Thank God for someone who knows something about the Intel mobile processor. I usually get flamed for even mentioning the Celeron M in a positive way. I'll be building a gaming system based on the Dothan processor; do you have any links to your rigs or anything?

The problem with going the Celeron M, is the uber cheapness of the chip is offset by the uber expensiveness of the board. A64s or Semprons are the better bang for buck and are going to handle everything but gaming a little better.

Sure, depends on your goals though. Just like any chip it has it's strong and weak points.

Those are some very nice price/performance numbers on that Celeron widefault. I'm going to keep that in mind when I'll need a low power consuming box that can handle desktop tasks. Core Duos running on the desktop seem very promising as well. :)

$30 CPU + $266 mobo seems whack

It's nice to hear some comparison and overclocking stories on the P-M, always wondered.

Honestly, the boards are NOT that much more expensive than any other GOOD board. And there's always the option of an Asus P4 board with the CT479 adapter.

I've been lucky, two of my setups use refurb AOpen i855GME boards from Newegg that were around $130. This latest system was put together for around $250. That's board, CPU, memory, PSU, storage, everything. Granted, a lot of it is used stuff I picked up on the cheap.

WO, no links or anything. One is my personal home system, another my file server, one is the start of an HTPC, another an embedded system project, and the latest is my test bed. I also have #6 in the early stages, which is another embedded setup. Just don't have the desk space for that one.

maybe pick up the new abit mini pc, i just did a build on one of those for V-day for my girl, pc is slick looking, silent, very easy to setup, and can be had for under 300 that will get you an optical drive, case, mobo, PSU, just add HDD, memory, and CPU.

i picked up a 1.73 2mb 533fsb right here on these forums for 100 shipped. great price for that CPU.

just offering options...options baby options!!

The P-Ms are great chips if you can score the parts inexpensively, but you have to agree that's alot to be spending for one piece of hardware that would normally cost you $75-85 new and $250 is alot to be spending to most people. You can get a 90nm, 2.0GHz Sempron 64 and TForce for under $200 and with Vista due out fairly soon, a P-M is sort of pointless.

I dropped $260 on a mini-ITX P-M board for a project, but believe me, there really were no other options and my teeth were hurting after shelling out that much dough.

As for Newegg refurbs, they can be worth it, but once you get burned a few times having to ship back and forth and wasting time, it loses alot of attraction.

The AOpen Pandora is a great box though. I think that is what you are talking about, boasist?

yeah they had the code name pandora until retail release then it went to just mini pc. I have the first revision, which lacks dual core support. However its crazy how well that p4m performs in that box. I got mine for 255 shipped, that is for the combo drive model. very happy with it. can't say enough.

what are you guys using to get DVI out of these itx boards. I would like to have a mini-itx form factor but it seems getting dvi out of any of these would be near impossible =(

although, you could also buy a nice s478 board, (p4c800 e delux), then buy a CT-479 which is a socket 478 to 479 adapter, you can get a basic s478 board for 40 bucks or so, then the adapter is another 20, i see them all the time on xtremesystems.org for sale, sometimes on here, and anandtech. that way will probably be the cheapest.
