Pentium M + 915 chipset...

There are a couple of boards out there that support the Pentium M and feature the newer 915 chipset, but if the the Pentium M's bus is 400 MHz, how does it gain any benefit from a 533 MHz bus with DDR2? Is the 533 MHz speed achieved only via overclocking, or is there some aspect of the CPU/chipset combo I don't understand?

Pentium M's with an xx0 number have a 533Mhz bus, such as say a P-M 740 which is 1.73Ghz on a 533Mhz bus. You should be able to overclock yours to that at the very least anyways.
 
get the ct-479 and hawk a good asus board from fs/t forums and get a C0 dothan, then you can get 2.6 ghz 800~1000 bus speed with mild luck/good memory and laugh at the 915m's 533 bus speed :D a lot of people are getting 2.8 ghz+, the average being at 2.7 ghz tho, also keep in mind that dothan is clock for clock faster then everything out there, so you wont be dissapointed in performance ;)

i managed to buy two P4C800-E's for $90 total :eek: amasing how many people do not realise the value of these mobos esp in the case of the ct-479
 
ryuji: i dont think deals like that exist right now.

if i could get the board for 50, the 479 adapter for less, and a cpu capable of high clocks for under 100 i'd jump on it.

i bought both p4c800-e's for $50 and $40 minus shipping yesterday, you can get a ct-479 for $47, ebay is your friend for getting the actual dothans :) just at this moment there arnt any up there because they got snatched up

either way you'd be a fool to get a 915 over a ct-479, the dothan chipsets dont get anywhere near what the ct-479 setups can get , and there cheaper overall, $200 for a mobo my ass... i take the p4c any day over that pos dont even think about the 855, lol
 
yeah. the only flaw i see in that board is that it uses AGP instead of PCI-E.

when i upgrade mobo im PROBABLY going to switch to PCI-E

*edit*, im basically looking for a system to kick the ass out of my 1700+@ 2.3/a7n8x/1gbpc3200/9600XT box.. *and preferably relatively cheap*
 
dothan even with a 6800 gt would do that quite well

most dothans see higher then that, esp the 533 dothans, those see 2.8 ghz, the 400 bus dothans top out at about that speed, THG didnt think of turning the mult down on the cpu and ocing the fsb more :rolleyes:

also, asus does makes a pci-express socket 478 motherboard its just a little hard to get


personaly, im replacing my 4 ghz prescott with a dothan. im positive i wont be dissapointed
 
I wouldn't trust THG to benchmark a broken LCD monitor. Though it's been proven that P-M's are comparable to A64's running same clock.

i wasnt showing off the dothan, i was pointing out that even tho THG doesnt have a verry great reputation, the benchmarks are about right, only foolish thing THG did was they didnt lower the multiplier, with the ct-479 they had they were more then capable of running at 250 fsb, heck i have seen 300 fsb dothans, but that sees the same limitations of the p4's mainly the mobo stops before the cpu

wouldnt it be more fair to compare the dothan with the fsb at 200 so its a direct comparison to how the prescott/a64 was running :rolleyes:

i am totally ready to build a P-m system but i am waiting for PCI-E boards. Wonder if it would be worth waiting to Q1 next year? My Northwood 3.06 533 is getting long in the tooth, especially being limited to AGP.

personaly ill stick with my 6800 gt, it already out performs a 6800 ultra, (for some reason it wont run at 400 core at 1.21 ghz ram but it will at 1.1 ghz, ohwell i get more performance so i aint complaining) by the time i need a better graphics card meron and the 8800's will be out :p and i will not have wasted money on current generation stuff, this dothan build is costing me $50 total(sending max3 and prescott back to friend in exchange for ct-479 and a good ocing dothan)
 
Well I only have a 6800 vanilla, running games at 1280x1024 is getting harder and harder, 68xx cards arnt alot cheaper then 78xx cards so it seems to make sence not to buy old tech. I wouldnt buy a Dothan but instead wait for Yohna (sp?) so I can get ahold on Dual Core. I want to wait for Conroe but im afraid that I cant last a whole year on what a currently have. If I went this route when conroe does arrive most of my parts will be interchangeable (78xx board (if its still fast enough to be worth it), possibly DDR2 Ram, hard drives, dvd drives, etc).

Either that orIi could just build a AMD system, which is an option.

what you must wait for is merom, dual core HT dothan with better SSE2/SSE3, and 64 bit

suffer a year, and enjoy BEING ABLE TO PLAY games, i have had no pc for about 2 months now, i have been unable to play games since my prescott blew my max3's capacitors :( damn that system consumed a lot of power, 410+ watts full gpu/cpu load , the cpu calculated out to 180 watts of heat based upon the cpu temp :rolleyes: good part is dothan consumes this :eek:

based on the recent benchmarks for the new cores, the graphics/whatever THG did with there 3.6 prescott, the graphics card consumes ~95 watts of power, ill take my ~75 watt 2.8 ghz dothan please

low power for me for now on, i was like :eek: when i calculated/discovered that i was overloading my DUAL 18 AMP 12v rail
 
Yohna will just be a Dual core Dothan with better fpu and other instructions right? while merom is a dual core with HT and 64 bit? Its gonna be a tough choice...a choice I cannot make untill the early next year, determine if this machine has any game left in it and what the benchmarks for yohna look like...once memron/conroe come out i could always put that cpu in my HTPC, its still running a old Duron 800Mhz . :D So it wouldnt go to waste hehe.

Who are you trying to prove this to? I knew it already. 3GHz on air is quite impressive though. I beleive I've seen as high as 3.6 (IIRC) on single stage, but I haven't seen more than 2.8 on air before.

I'm beginning to wonder what AMD has up their sleeve. I mean, once P6 architecture goes back to desktop in from of Yonah; the K8's are outperformed and outclocked at the same time... a dangerous combination. It's pretty safe to assume that AMD is working on a next-gen architecture as we speak (it wouldn't make much sense for them to just sit there and twiddle their thumbs, now would it?)... in fact, there were even some rumors on the INQ which proves that something is afoot. Though, -what, I'd like to know. Well, in the meantime, I can stay excited about Yonah :)

Another interesting aspect to contemplate is the whole socket S1/M2 business... though it seems S1 was scrapped in favor of just M2. Either way, this means that AMD is attempting to achieve two things:
-port the K8 architecture over to DDRII memory
-"solve" the socket dillema by introducing a unified socket again (much like Socket A)
On one side, that's a good thing... with DDRII maturing and finally becoming cheaper than DDR, it actually makes more and more sense to buy it. And a unified socket is nice too. But it would also mean that it's slowing down their progress with the next gen architecture, the K10 (they skipped K9 for obvious reasons). So Intel would enjoy the performance crown for a while again, at least a year, I imagine.
 
i did not say amd isnt working hard to make somthing better, i am comparing cost vs performance, $300 mobo,cpu,adapter beats a $1000 a64 setup, :p
 
well. likewise a 300 dollar amd setup can match a 1000 dollar amd setup ;)

*doesnt stop me from drooling on dothans power useage tho*

You could get a CABNE s939 Opty. They're essentially FX-55 that cost $160. A lot, too, hit 3GHz on air. And by the way, last time I checked - the higher rated P-M's (like the 760) are quite expensive. Hell, even the lower end stuff isn't cheap. I got a used 725 for $120. A new one would be around $200, and this is pretty much the slowest chip around now.

the 7x0 is what you want to get, doesnt quite matter which, the 730 gets 2.8 ghz fairly commonly and you can find them on ebay for about $90-120

dothan is like venice in it doesnt really matter what modle you get for ocing, autho the 780's seem getting better ocs(iirc 3.2 ghz or so) probably only because there new revision steppings the 730 gets 2.8 ghz at high fsb quite easly and its the lowest modle dothan so people upgrading there laptops are selling them off :p
 
725==730. One advantage though; the 725 can be pinmodded to 533, so then it will run at 2.13 default.
 
Well im at a cross roads right now. For the money i can either get a intel 820-830 setup, or a dothan 730-740 setup. Problem is i dont know which is faster. I ve seen pi results of the new stepping 840's(b0) @4.6ghz only pulling 28seconds. A 2.8ghz dothan can do 26 seconds, and 3ghz+ can do 24 seconds. On the other hand my 3.7ghz non hyper intel does 36 seconds.

one difference, the 7x0's oc farther and have a higher max fsb, the 7x5's typically max out at 170 or so fsb, they also typically max out at 2.6 ghz, almost any 7x5 can do 2.8~3 ghz on air
