Is it possible to run a Pntium II Xeon with a Slot 2 connector without a fan and keeping it cool enough for operation? I know I would need a better heatsink and to possibly down clock the CPU, but would that keep it cool enough to run it without a fan? WHat are the best CPUs anyway to run fanless in a Micro ATX case and motherboard?

Its possible to run the Pentium 2 Xeon without a fan, but the processor gets hot as hell even w/o a fan. But the mini-itx motherboards with the fanless cpu's run cool most of the time.

I have a p2 Celeron and the sucker is hot. I don't know what the maximum operating temperature it's rated at, maybe it's well above 100°C, but I wouldn't risk running without an hsf. You could get away with passive cooling, though. I've seen much faster p3's completely passive cooled btw. So, there are slocket type heatsinks that are large enough.

If you want something usable & fanless, go with the VIA EPIA mini-ITX boards.

On the P2 and P3 Xeons the heatsink helps, but the processor still gets around 90 degrees or higher and this is the normal temp for these processors. It helps more if there is two processors with the HSF or other fans blowing on them to cool them off.

Xeon? No fan? Don't even try it. If you have to have fanless, Mini-ITX boards are the only way to go unless you want to water cool the box. Pentiums on up have to have active cooling. Even the Zahlman heatsinks rely on air movement in the case to work right.
