I have an old PII rig I am messing with, and want to see what kind of speeds I can get out of it. Does anyone here have tips/hints and/or links to info on OCing these? It's a SL2SH (400 MHz) chip which I have OCed to 450MHz, however anything over that and I lose video, my guess is because of the AGP videocard can not take it, so I am looking at picking up another (PCI?) card that might be able to handle it.

Also, how do these handle ECC RAM? I ask because its much cheaper for 133 speed (have 100 right now) RAM in ECC than it is for non-ECC. Temps are good so far even with the OC, I took the chip apart and put some better fresh TIM and am also looking at some of the aftermarket HS's or maybe some custom set up.

But most of all....Anyone have any info on this? Did some Googling and came up with very little.
 
these things dont OC any thing like modern chip 450 might be all your going to get
also as you have noted the AGP and PCI bus' dont lock so you may be at the max for that setup
 
I know they are not going to OC like the Core line of chips etc, however I feel that there is more in this chip and it's the card that is holding me back, everything still seems to run, just video cuts out. So I was going to look for a card that can OC well and see if I can take it higher.

I am not scared to do any kind of hard modding if it needs to be done, I have 2 chips, 2 mobos and 2 sets of 100 speed RAM, I don't care if I fry any of them, it's just going to end up in the trash anyway.
 
if you can get a PCI card you might be able to hit 500mhz.. but thats a big might.. your biggest limitation is the motherboard.. since like elios said.. pci and AGP clocks are not locked..
 
It's a Intel 440BX chipset board, and yes, I am well aware of the non-locked bus. Which is why I am posting to see if there might be a "tick" out there or some mod that might help me out with this. Or maybe even just a PCI card that can take the OC. I KNOW there are some guys on here that messed with these "back in the day" and have some info that can help me out.
 
It is a lot easier to overclock the Pentium 2 chips that ran at a stock bus speed of 66mhz than it is to overclock the ones that have a stock bus speed of 100mhz.

Most PCI cards start crapping out at about 38mhz, although there are some that can handle 40mhz.. but then you have to start worrying about data corruption on the IDE controller. Back in the day I did have a few boards that could handle the 40mhz PCI speed but they were all AMD based systems.

As for using an AGP card above the speed you are running now... 75Mhz AGP speed... hrmmm, not really seeing it happening.

Do any of the boards you have have bus speed jumpers? If so, you may want to try different combinations to see if you can find one that has a lower speed for the PCI and AGP busses.... especially ones that aren't documented.

Oh yeah.. almost forgot.... for cooling, get a 4-heatpipe stock AMD socket 939 heatisnk (The Opteron ones rock for this purpose as they are lower profile and fit easier when modding them). All you have to do is drill a few mouting holes in the base of the heatsink that line up with holes in the stock P2 heatspreader and then use bolts and nuts to attach them together. The resulting Frankenstein will cool the chip way better than any other P2 heatsink setup you can find... although I really doubt that heat is you problem.
 
No, no jumpers other than the normal ones and for FSB, I found a PDF on the board and gives no info on it. I had also thought about the stock HS thing, since I have a good number sitting around, had also thought about some of the GPU coolers etc. And I agree heat is not the problem, since it runs quite cool I think, and I have a 120mm blowing right down on it, I just wanted to be sure its not. I also did some checking on the PSU (being quite old and full of dust) and the voltages didn't look so hot, so I am replacing it with a 600w unit that I know has good power.

careful with that modern PSU are set up for high draw on 12v that old P2 board uses 5V for almost every thing and may need the -5v rail which some new ones dont have any more

It's not really a "modern" PSU, it's older and came out of some server like thing if I remember right, and has the -5V rail and something like 30 or so amps on the 5V, it's been a wile, I don't remember the specs, might also be just a 500w unit, not sure, but more than enough to power the PII.
 
is the 400, with seperate cache, as in on the side and not integrated into the chip? (seem to remember the 50's i.e. 350, 450's had on die cache and others had cache on the side).

did you take off the plastic thing? and just have the bare slot. other than that i don't remember p2's being high overclockers, it was all about the celeron 300a back then.
 
Pretty sure it has integrated 16KB L1, with separate 512KB L2. This is just what I believe I remember from the datasheet, so don't quote me on that. :D

And yes, I did take it apart to replace the TIM.
 
go find a good slot A mobo and a Athlon 700 and goldfingers card and have some real fun
or a 300a or 333a Celaron
 
Lol, I am not looking to buy something, or do something that's a known good OCer etc etc. I have this, and want to see what it can do, I like tinkering with things that I have no idea how to go about it.
 
PCI video card MIGHT get you to 500 on it depends on the card
and even that might not work the IDE might no like it 450 imo is all your going to get out of it stable
the challenge with the Athlon is cooling the 700 can do 1Ghz but takes crazy cooling to keep it stable

Crazy cooling ehhh :rolleyes:.... a simple modded s939 Opteron, 4-heatpipe, low profile cooler will keep a slot-A Athlon super cool. Yes, I am speaking from experience.

Clocked at a little over 1Ghz and the heatsink fins do not even get warm. Kinda wish I had a board that could do a higher FSB so I could stick it at 1.1+Ghz.
