Pentium D805 stinking bigtime... help?!

Hey all,

I've only done a couple of builds, but for my little bro's (budget) computer I grabbed a Pentium D805 (2.66GHz, Smithfield cores). I don't exactly know what I was expecting, but running 1 million digits of super pi takes 49.953 seconds... from a dual-core processor that sounds kind of lame. Is this normal for this processor? Does anybody have any experience with it? Let me know if you can. Thanks for the help in advance.

I don't know what Core 2 Duos do in Super-Pi as I don't have any scores in front of me and I am not a benchmark whore but at stock speeds especially, Pentium D's are lame. I've got a Pentium Extreme Edition 965 (3.73GHz) dual core with Hyperthreading and the Core 2 Duo E6300 with 2MB of L2 cache running at 1.86GHz hands the afore mentioned Pentium 965 it's ass in some apps, while being very close in others. Overclocked the Pentium stands no chance in hell. No 4.5GHz Pentium D can match a Core 2 Duo at 3GHz or more.
 
SuperPi is single-threaded only, so the second core has no benefit for it.

It's a single threaded program so dual core won't help increase the score for one instance. Overclock the D 805. 2.66GHz on a NetBurst core CPU won't get you much performance.

For comparison to your bad SuperPi score, my Merom core (single core) Celeron M 520 does 1M in 39s at 1.6GHz. ;)
 
The 805 gets ok when you clock it to 5GHz+ lol. Even though a Conroe will still own it, it is nice to see 5GHz in Computer Properties lol.

spoiled bastard, lol. Get the PD805 to around 4.0ghz. It shouldn't be very hard to do and it'll run at decent speeds. I'd expect a superpi 1mb of around 30 seconds. I get 27 at 4.7 (don't laugh you C2D owners, it's a PD). :)
 
my e4300 @ 2.4 does around 23.9s on a 1m run, which is half a second faster then the t7400 (2.16 4 mb l2) in my work laptop

basically, 805 @ stock = suckiest dualcore imaginable
 
Who cares though?
The number you're getting seems normal for a D805 CPU, so the system doesn't seem to be crippled.
You get what you pay for.
As long as the system does what you bought it for, right (which I'm sure is not running superpi)?

that's on a 950 (presler core) .. I'd love to see a smithfield that high on air, or even water :).

probably dim the lights for the whole neighborhood when that puppy is priming..

I could always drop my brothers PD805 into it, but I'm not sure how that'd go. I'm trying to get 4.93, but heat is just unbearable. I have almost 0 air circulation in my case cause I'm out too many case fans :(
 
Personally, getting x seconds better in Super-Pi is pretty meaningless to me.
I just have my PD805 at 3.6Ghz because any higher and the HSF is unbearably loud.
Besides, isn't a 500Mhz difference basically nothing with Netburst?

After a certain point yes, in the lower clocked areas it's a big difference.

My machine feels the same running at 2.4GHz as it does running at 3.6GHz. For general usage anyway.

spoiled, lol. I think netburst has that effect, every 200 mhz = snappier feeling. It's happened on all netbursts i've overclocked.

I'd agree. My server is running a Pentium Extreme Edition 965 and it's snappier at 4GHz than it is at 3.73GHz. Plus the differences I found overclocking my Pentium 550 that I used to have were relatively profound as I recall.

but after a while, the feeling goes away and you start to want more (desensitization).. lol. Netburst overclocking just creates an addiction.
 
the 805 is just plain junk.

It runs WAY too hot and is slow even at 4ghz. I had a couple but just couldn't deal with the heat issue. Drove me nuts.

Id rather an AM2 cheapie brisbane... unless you have it in a mobo to hold u off until you get a nice CPU or a fast cooelr running one like the 4xxx series or 6xxx series.

what heat issue? Seriously... my PD805 with a stock cooler and some intel thermal compound (not the pad) idle temps were around 35-40C and load was around 45-50C... ? That's hot?
