does windows xp show the pentium D 930 as 4 way? because of the dual core with hyperthreading?
 
The 930D does not have hyperthreading, only dual-core. So no, you will only see two cores. The 955X, on the other hand, has dual-core and then hyperthreading in each core, for a total of four. You will see four cores on that one.
 
Yea, only the extreme editions have dual core with hyperthreading... so it'd only show as 2 cores (which still isn't bad)
 
$1158.... shazam. heh. k, maybe I should rephrase the question. Any idea when they are going to be mainstream? :)
 
Pretty much never. Intel's Extreme Edition line has never really came down, even from the socket 478 days.

So therefore Win XP Pro supports one dual core hyperthreaded CPU. XP does support the EE CPUs.
 
Microsoft has defined CPU as a processor package. (or socket) So when quad core procesors come out, it will still only be considered a "single" cpu system and work even with XP Home.

XP Home, supports dual core & even the 955XE.
XP Pro will support dual packages, which could be like 2 opteron 275's (2 dual core processors = 4 cpus)
