Pentium D to Core Duo

If you have a 975X board that has the proper VRM, then you can upgrade to Core 2 Duo, but not Core Duo.
 
Core Duo is Yonah, the dual core Pentium M chips. You can't upgrade to them from a Penitum D because they're a different socket.

Conroe's title at release will be 'Core Duo 2'
It's currently supported by a few of the 975X boards, the Intel 975XBX Rev304, the Asus P5WD2-E Premium, I think a few others but I can't quote boards right now.

this chip is not supported by any asus boards out. why do i keep seeing this so often here?

Conroe is supported by the 1.03G rev of the P5WD series, you just need a BIOS update. Though you're part right, I think even the P5WD2-E started as a 1.02 rev which won't support Conroe - but buying one now you should get one that supports Conroe with a BIOS update.

The 1.03G rev updates the motherboards voltage regulator to be compatible with the VRM11 standard required for Conroe.

hmm right now only the Xtremesystems guys, not the kind of rock solid reporting I'd rely on when buying a $250 board I know.
Could have sworn I saw an official-ish news clip on that, but I can't find it, so maybe not...
