My pentium d 805 is running extremely hot it is about 60C on idle and goes up to about 76-80C when I game and as soon as it hits 76C I drop to 15fps in BF2142. I don't have a good case and I also have a pretty crappy heat sink so I am wondering if I get a copper heat sink if I will get a noticeable temp drop?
 
Yeah its probably those two problems you listed and possible a bad thermal compound contact with the CPU. Just because the heatsink is going to be copper doesnt automatically make it good. It will help defenetely.
If you have any thermal compound on you, reapply it. It may help a little.

Look into a Scythe Ninja, Scythe Infinitiy, Tuniq Tower, or those new Thermalright Ultra Extremes. Those will do the job nicely.

Reseat the HSF that is a very cool running chip and even on the worst HSF's on the market will not get near that hot. My friend had his to 3.2GHZ on stock cooling. (On water now sitting at 3.9GHZ)
