Pentium D Cooling Problem

I just bought a new motherboard for a socket 775 Pentium D dual core 2.8 chip that I had lying around. I figured since a new motherboard purchase would be a good idea since I had the chip laying around doing nothing, and it was only 25$ to boot. However, it didn't come with a 775 heatsink/fan. I used a stock intel socket 478 cooler (the one with the copper core and aluminum on the outside) and just placed it on top of it and used some article silver compound. So basically, the heatsink/fan was just sitting on top of it, but I ensured that there was connectivity between the heatsink and fan, and the chip so it would transfer heat to it. However, when I booted it up, everything worked fine, but when I went into the hardware monitoring part of the BIOS, it showed the heat going up to around 200 degrees F and then shutting off. I felt the heatsink itself, and it wasn't even hot... it really wasn't even warm, really. All of the pentium D's I've seen have HUGE heatsinks on them, but why is my chip getting so hot that it shuts down, when the heatsink isn't even warm/hot? It doesn't seem to really be generating any heat.

Can somebody please shed some insight into what the problem would be here? I mean, the heatsink and the fan have pretty good contact with eachother, but it's not even getting anywhere near "warm". And I also used silver thermal compound, like I said above. I googled Pentium D heatsink's, and they all pretty much look like the stock intel 478 heatsink that I used... so it doesn't really seem like a huge heatsink is necessary. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. :confused::confused:
 
Uhm, no pressure on heatsink = piss poor heat dissipation. You need pressure on the heatsink, the retention clips are not there to keep the heatsink in place so much as put constant pressure on the heatsink. What you are doing is little better than running the CPU without a heatsink at all. Also there are no stock 478 heatsinks that can take the heat output of any Pentium D. You're looking at a 10 - 20w difference on the low end.
 
At work we have a couple P4 D computers and they work just fine with the stock heatsink.
