What is the highest degree of temperature you guys think is safe for this chip? i had it running at 60*C full load at 3.516 GHz, i did a little polishing and go the temps down to 57.5 with nothing else changing, and this is with uncured AS5, so the temps may drop another degree. This is all on air cooling with a Zalman cnps 7700-cu running at full speed.

i eventually plan on watercooling but i want to know how much power i can fart out of this chip with my air. is 65*C safe? idle of course is substantially lower at 42*C on average...

65*C is safe.... So is 70 and above... If you worry about killing the CPU with heat itself, you got nothing to worry about. Throtteling will kick in to save the day...
Now, too much voltage is more likely to actually kill your CPU. So watch it there.
But again, cooler your CPU is the better. Especially when overclocking: HOT CPU = Less Stable CPU... That's not something you want. So keep is as cool  as possible. Water will be great for that...
Good luck.

how do i know if i am running too much voltage? let me guess, flames lol

let me reword that, how do i know how much voltage to run and when to stop adding voltage?

Well, if you haven't changed the CPU voltage manually, then it's probably still running at stock volts. In your case it's a VERY good indicator that you can OC your CPU to 4GHz or higher with more V-core ( <- CPU voltage). But you will HAVE to get better cooling before doing that. It's quite common to get 4GHz + out of D 920 and 930's so you may be in luck. It depends on what motherboard you have too. You sould be able to get into motherboard's BIOS and adjust voltages for RAM, CPU, PCI-e, and others.
Again, cooling is the key here... ;)

I have a new ASUS P5W DH Deluxe, the stock voltage on this board was way off, it was around 1.2, so the chip wouldnt overclock at all. i raised it to 1.4 and it appears it is only running at around 1.36, i didnt go through the process of trial and error, just kinda set it up there and havent touched it, it probably doesnt need to be as high as it is...

Download SpeedFan and CPU-Z (Google them) so you can monitor Voltages and actuall CPU/RAM speeds a bit better. The Vcore drop is normal on most motherboards. What you set in BIOS is not always what's delivered to the CPU. Also, under load the Vcore will go down even more, sometimes by as much as 0.05v. So you have to compensate for that too. All this has an impact on your CPU's temperature, so it's a "double-edged sword"... :p You got a great mobo, and your overclocking right now is limited only by your cooling... Get a "big-chunk-a-copper" cooler and you'll get 4GHz on air. Plenty people done it...

yes, i have cpu-z, it was reporting 1.2 at stock voltage, the last board i had cpu-z reported 1.3x so i figured the board was wrong, changed some settings and got it where i want it to be...
