Pentium D 925 versus Core 2 E4300

Video/Audio Encoding and retro gaming are the assigned tasks, it will be paired with a 6800GT and 1GB of DDR on an ASRock Dual-Vista board. Which one at stock will be faster? The difference is $100 and I'm wondering if it is worth it for the Core 2...

The E4300 is actually an E6600 with less cache and default-clocked much lower. So even with stock cooling you can just jump the FSB up to 1066 on an E4300 and you will have almost the same thing as an E6600. As for the article linked above, look at the E6420 results, your OC'ed E4300 should pretty much hit the same results, though it will be higher on things dependent on clock cycles and lower on things more dependent on Cache... Still overall that is about the performance you would get.

I couldn't tell you, I never ran a P4 S775 CPU, but I just got my E4300 to almost 3200 (3195, actually), and it freaking smokes. SuperPi is 16.276s for 1M calculations. Encoding is a breeze, gaming is swift.
