I have this Pentium D 820 cpu running 50 degrees Celsius while idle, I'm not schooled in this area is this too high?
I am having a system slow down and think this is why but would love some imput.
The system temps are 40 degree and the hard drive is in the 30's

totally normal temperature for that chip.. i had one of those pentium D (D840).. idle temps always 45-55C, load temps 65-70C. with stock cooler, and those chips ran really hot.. i would not worry too much for that idle temps. tell us the load. and what program are yo using to measure it..

50'C idle temp is about right for those dual core Prescott/Presler core based Pentiums on a stock cooler, under load would be around 65-70'C, but again depends on the airflow and size of your case. If you're running one of those rigs with a PD in the long term get rid of that stock cooler get a Hyper 212 or something which go for like $15-25 slap it on and enjoy less noise and combat against that heat unless you like a space heater/leaf blower beside your feet.

Exactly. These ran like mini ovens.

well to be honest I never ran temps under a load it is running hot on idle heating up my whole room and it seems slow as well. I may just later upgrade to something cooler and more quicker. The heat sink fan sounds like a snow blower.:(

Yeah i know that feeling...!

Any actual i3 ivy bridge will just blow off that D820 in performance, and the max heavy loads temps will be in the line of your actual idle temps with the D820.. Average normal load temp are less than 50 even with stock cooler..

Well I seem to have found the problem, when I got this system I pulled the heatsink and reapplied the thermal paste but didn't look at the fan directional arrow and it was blowing out of the case and not through the heatsink fins!
I imagine it had been like that for some time and when I got it it never occurred to me to even look until tonight. My temps now are 43 degrees-47 degrees loaded, and the whole system is much more responsive.
Thanks for all the advice and help!:D
