Pentium D 3.0 vs E2160

Have my choice between:

Pentium D 3.0ghz with an Intel motherboard

and

Pentium E2160 1.8 with a Foxcon motherboard


Same memory, same drives, only thing different is the motherboard and processor


edit: Forgot to mention my uses: Mostly light gaming for this machine, world of warcraft, battlefield 2, maybe getting into crysis since I'll be getting a video card in the ~$100 range.
 
Get the Pentium E2160 for certain. The Pentium D is a dual core using the Netburst architecture (its two Pentium 4s glued together). You don't want that, at all.

The E2160 overclocked to 3GHz, which it can do easily, will utterly destroy the Pentium D.
 
Even at stock speeds, the E2160 will outperform the Pent.D 3Ghz... not by much, but still outperforms.
 
sorry forgot to mention that even the foxcon motherboard is locked by Dell so no overclocking until I find a replacment mobo

but ya thats what i figured too, even at stock speeds it would still be years faster
 
Another vote for the e2160. Although if you live in a colder area, you may want the Pentium D to keep your house warm.

hey man..with my old P4 and 2 raptors, i often didnt even need to use heat, it doubled as a space heater /thumbsup

Get the E2160, all else fails, you may be able to throw in an e5 or e7 series later on.
 
E2160 is definitely faster. I actually swapped out a PD 915 that I had running at 3GHz for an E2140 running at stock 1.6GHz, and the E2140 is still faster.
 
Just got home and set this puppy up, So far it's handled everything I've thrown at it with a breeze.

Specs:
E2140 1.8Ghz
2GB (4x 512MB)
8300GS

I was also suprised to see it played Battlefield 2142 at medium settings, I'll be purchasing a better video card in a couple weeks.

At one point I was Formatting a second HD, Installing windows updates, installing office 2007, playing some mp3s, and browsing the web, and there was no slow down at all. Task manager claimed 90-95% cpu usage but it just kept chugging along..

Used a P4 3.0 until last year when I purchased a gateway with a amd turion 2.0, but this thing already blows my laptop out of the water, I couldn't believe it...
