So, my friend has got a Pentium 4 550 system, and before he had the Intel Stock Cooler, which was soso. He got an Alpine 7 from Arctic Cooling, and definately loves how quiet it is. However, the CPU now is running super hot, at about 70C. IF he points a desk fan at the case with the side panel off it goes down to 60C. I myself have checked this out and everything seems fine. I put on new thermal paste and still no improvement. What could be causing it to run so hot, other than the fact that it is a Prescott? Is there any other alternative for it to run cooler other than buying some extravagant kind of cooler like water cooling?

Would an XP 120 w/ a Nexus 120mm provide better cooling than 70C? =[

Is it seated correctly with thermal paste/grease/compound? I just dont see it going so hot unless there is no compound or not seated correctly..

Make sure your friend knows to keep the fan on and side of the case off until cooling is controlled or the CPU will fry.

What case is the rig in and is there a good airflow?
Was the CPU cleaned before new HSF fitted and was AS5 or similar applied?
RPM of fan is temp controlled through the BIOS. Was BIOS adjusted?

I just fitted SI-120 and is beautiful and cool for CPU and surroubding components.

Try to put some more fans in that case by the looks of it if you get some better airflow and a more effiecent headsink it should really help your heat problems go away.

Tell you friend to upgrade, or buy a new computer.

Then, just turn the 550 into a folding or seti computer, and use it for those cold winter nights.
