Please post your comments on the Pentium 5 processor and what you think they are going to put into it.

It will be 65nm and have x86-64 instructions and be faster than the Pentium 4, but maybe not at first but probably.

I assume by Pentium 5 you mean Merom/Conroe?

no more pentium 5

pentium X
its new name

Link? Not that I dont believe you nor care about what the next pentium is called, I'd just like to see what goes along with this news.

It's called the Pentium D.

Bah, but that isnt a new architecture. It's two prescotts linked together, like the X2 is two San Diegos/Venices linked together and undervolted. It's more like a spinoff of the Pentium 4 rather than the next generation.

For the next Pentium, we'll need to see single and dual core Conroe CPU's.

"The Pentium V is likely to fly along at between 5GHz to 7GHz, have 2MB plus of level two cache, be built on a 90 nanometer process, and have a stackable design."

Yeah, the ALU will hit those speeds, but good luck getting the rest of the 90nm transistors doing that at room temperature. That's really old and outdated though, but still funny. It's like the predictions 2001: A Space Oddysee made.

Also, isn't Tejas dead and replaced by Presler?

arent they done to 68nm now?

65nm, but yes, that's the next step. Presler will be a 65nm part. I think Intel will have 65nm out this year, and AMD's Fab36 will be pumping some 65nm hammers out next year

that's old news. they ditched Tejas. this is the news from the time when Intel were talking about 10GHz on the prescott architecture.

How about something based on the Pentium M at around 3-5 ghz, hyperthreaded, possibly dual core. with a fast 1066 or better fsb. And 64bit of coarse.

The Pentium 5 is more than likely to succeed the Pentium D. And it will be based off the modified yonah core. When netburst finally dies.

Because the 10 or so stage pipeline of the Pentium M makes it impractical to try to hit such clockspeeds. Also, hyperthreading, as I understand, needs a longer pipeline to work.

Well, when you get a Prescott to 4ghz, it's ALU is running at 8ghz. That's what Intel was referring to I belive. I remember they (Intel in their labs) had an (Northwood generation I think) ALU running at 10ghz under super cold conditions.

I wasn't thinking stackable design...although it's pretty cool....
64 bit...
5-10ghz clock speeds
either really high or really low (more likely) voltage
DDR3? memory rated at about a gig
i don't know if they will keep the lga socket or not...i think they should make a new socket if the current lga mobos wont be compatible (to avoid noobs from trying to put it on and be like
 )

the Pentium II was a Pentium Pro with MMX. The Pentium III was a Pentium II with SSE. It wasnt even until Coppermine that the PIII got ondie cache... so whats your point? :D

intel has made generation jumps before with much less than adding another core.

if intel named their next chip the pentium5, i would personally fly to whereever their marketing offices are and bitch slap their marketing people for naming it that. its redundant. "pentium" was meant to follow the 486 (as the 586, but you can't patent numbers) so its like 5ium 5. how redundant.

Yes, but they have also kept the Pentium 4 name consistant while using the Netburst architecture. From Willamette to Northwood was a die shrink and more ondie cache. But from Northwood to Prescott... a lot was added. Things like a bigger cache, longer pipeline, 64bit extensions, etc. A very significant jump in both directions, but nonetheless it was a Netburst CPU and was thus the Pentium 4.

PentiumD is based on netburst, so they have recently disproved that

tualatin was also a big jump from the coppermine with 512 cache, data prefetch tech, die shrink, low volt signaling... they didnt change there either, i really have no idea what constitues a new name for them and what doesnt  hell even from Katmai -> Coppermine they put the cache ondie and didnt change jack... intel is odd :p

But its two Pentium 4's on one die. It's not really a new generation in my opinion. Just, as I said earlier, more of a spinoff or a continuation.

If it were up to me, the CPU's would be referred to by their core names.

eh, to each his own - i think the dual cores is a new gen, its completly new tech for both AMD and Intel. i think here they should be referred to as hteir core names, thats what i do anyway :p

I mean, was the entire athlon XP line one generation? is hte entire p4 line one gen? thats one hell of a generation... going on 5 years now

I think the current dual cores will usher a new generation more than BE a new generation. Get my drift?

So does this mean that if I want it to fly along faster, I can just buy another chip and stack them?

so called Pentium 5 does not exist. its Pentium 6. :)
Tejas was P5, Merom and Conroe are such a huge leap past Tejas that the P5 would only hurt its feelings.

But I have proven that the Pentium V can fly. What can Conroe do that's so superior to flying? I mean, shit, can it even stack? I thought not.

No you wouldn't. I bet you'd just whine about it on the internet.
:p

Okay that was funny as hell. And hell is just really funny to start with.

You know that kiddie anime they had on back in the 80s or whatever called Mysterious Cities of Gold, and towards the end there's this weird ass glowy thing that gets REALLY hot and melts a tunnel into the earth? It'd be like that. :p

Haha that's wicked. Hell, if one flew into my room and didn't require cold fusion to continue operation, I'd want one!
