ok so im an amd guy, but im not looking for a flam war....

anywho theres this link on asus's web site, where they say there supporting the "64 bit architecture of the P5". im wondering if that means pentium is finally gonna get on board with the P5. i mean its about time, and considering they've been able to stay in compitition with amd's 64 bit deals, using there own 32 bit deals, intels 64 bit deals autta pwn the amd ones. yea. if you have any sites, that have info on this rumer, please post em. im interested.

also, n force 5 is sposed to be out pretty soon, if anyone has any info on that id be grateful. thx alot.

P5 I think is what Asus calls the LGA775 Pentium 4's, hence the P5WD2 and P5ND2 boards.

I thought the Pentium name is going to be dead after the Pentium 4's?

We don't know yet. They might use core on the desktop.

Wouldn't make much to get rid of the most widely recognized product name in computers, though. I hear a lot of people asking for a computer with "Pentium."

thats not right, the add says right on it 64 bit tech.

I am pretty sure that pentium 5 will never exist. ( I mean the name) intel will use names like Core duo or intel 675 or Intel D 980

They didn't do Pentium 5, because the name would sound retarded and redundant.

ok so there are intel 64bit proces. see i didnt even know that. i mean in the 32bit battle with amd, amd was slaughterd. so how is it the Pentium Extreme 955 (you think P5 is a stupid name? how bout this one, exteeeeeeme 955 sounds like a socket to me) which im asuming is 64 bit, not on par with the FX-60?

your telling me that the good jewist community is losing to a bunch of pot smoking hippy processer manufacturers?

*dont ban me im not an anti semite nor do i think california is pot capital (BC is :D ))

I don't really get your post, but the 955EE is better than the 4800, and seems to trade off with the FX-60. Though It's been a while since I read the review.
I know that a 920 Pentium D at 3.73ghz, 1066MHz FSB smokes almost any AMD i've dealt with.

Maybe they should start selling a 920 at 3.7 then :)

apparently they'll be using the core name rather than pentium. I read a few articles that basically said the pentium name was done.

I would like to see the name Pentium 5. Just because I like the name. Why change something that is good and works. The Pentium name is widely recognized, you know.

But whatever, as long as the performance is there, They could call it shit on a stick and I would still buy one <3

i'm guessing this was a joke, but what does amd have to do with hippies and pot? looks like they may not be the only one. check with your dealer to see if your stuff was laced.

i thought i read a while ago that intel was abandoning the pentium name. or at least not naming processors the pentium 5.

Pentium is a recognized name, but I haven't heard someone ask for a Pentium in some time. Even Celerons are so fast now, that's not something ppl look for anymore (esp. since AMDs don't suck like they used to - think K6-3 days). They want to see big numbers on their chips (4400+, 3.8GHz, etc.).

64bit is such BS, it was an AMD marketing ploy to start, Intel played along to get that same market, but it is so not needed.

WinXP never needed a 64bit build, and Vista would have been just as good 32bit.

Yes and no. Currently 1 GB is the norm for game players and enthusiests but that amount is slowly creeping up to 2GB. 32-bit processors can only address up to 4GB of RAM. XP only addresses up to 3GB. That's not a lot of room for growth.

Bill Gates once said "No one will ever need more than 640K of RAM". We grew well beyond that a long time ago.

64-bit isn't a necessity now, but it is an inevitable step.

its "so not needed" huh? i donno man. why is 64bit not needed? was the upgrade from 8 to 16 bit "needed" was the upgrade from 16 to 32 "needed"? course! technology is constantly evolving to deny it and say "its not needed", espicially when its as fundimental as a processer is just ignorant. with itel signed with mac, and AMD signed with microsoft, im suprised that itel stock is still way up there. and how long do you think its gonna be before 64bit-exclusive programs are released? is vista 64-bit exclusive?

afaik, no. there will be a 32 and 64 version of Vista, to do otherwise would alienate the vast majority of the market.

well with mac realeasing that add about intel, and how my pc is apparently a "dull little box" and microsoft signing with AMD, i thought mabey, xp would be the last for 32bit intel ppl.

highly doubt it. with core duo being current at least until vista is released, having no software support in vista for it would be a really bad move.

its time, for you, to move on to s939 :D
no actually iv always liked pentium, just it seems for every technology intel releases amd reverse engineers it and makes it better. and hey, if intel doesnt stay in the PC field amd might suddenly go slack-ass because they dont have any compitition. all intel needs, is a new socket, less confusing names, and some 64bit bus, mem, and core processers. and to stop using stupid poblicity stunt names like core. wtf is that? core. so now when anyone says core the core-duo pops into there head.

and i wonder if anyone is ever gonna think of tri-core. thad be cool. run source, encoding programs, and ionno, 3dmark at the same time

but yea this is a pretty dead thread, it was just asus naming a mobo "P5.... with 64 bit mem!...."

but one more question, the intel extreme 975 is that core duo? or is pentium extreem edition its own (single cored) breed. and can some1 tell me wtf the "D" in some names stands for?

that is a pretty stupid statement, maybe people would not take full advantage of it in the home enviroment but that does not mean in the server/super computer world it would not.

no. core duo is a mobile line that intel just launched.

pentium D is the dual core, netburst based processor.

obviously youve never used 64-bit windows and cant vouch for the speed increase

you dont know the history of 64-bit computing, i do

is yonah netburst based? will conroe/merom be?

64 bit processors were around long before you came to such a stupid conclusion. if you really think amd developed 64 bit processors, you need to do some reading before you post, you'll look like less of an idiot.

No to both.

Banias was an evolution of Pentium3, which was more or less P6 (been around in one form or another since Pentium Pro, I think?) Intel's Haifa team redesigned the Pentium3 for higher performance and lower power consumption, and that's how Banias came to be. The Haifa team has had the entire Mobile division, from Banias to Dothan to Yonah (which was actually based on, but not identical to, the previous two). Most of Intel's next chips (Conroe/Merom and everything later) will be based on this team's developments. NetBurst is all but dead after this generation.
