i have a relativly new system with a pentium 4-540 (3.2/HT) in it. are there any other processor options that i could just swap into this system? i dont know how may pins i have, or if anything would work (ive not thought about or memorized processor specs for several years now).

anyone have any ideas?

run CPU-Z to see what chipset you have.

If you have a 915/925 chipset you're going to be limited to a Pentium 4 500 or 600 series. Hopefully, you can drop in a Cedar mill 6x1 series (65nm = cooler).

If you have a 945/955 chipset you could put a dual-core chip / Pentium D 800 series in there. And possibly the Pentium D 900 series (65nm = cooler).

I doubt you have a 975 chipset, if so you could use Pentium D 900's and possibly a Core 2.

I also doubt you have a 965 chipset, if so you could use ANY thing you want (any LGA 775 chip to be exact). Pentium 4 / D or Core 2 Duo.

He pretty much said it. I'm guessing, if this is a prebuilt, it's probably a 945P chipset. I've never seen any mainstream desktop running 955X chipsets.
