I am mostly an AMD guy, but I recently acquired a 1ghz Celeron and a P3 933 both of which are Socket 370. Both of the cores seem to have a purple tint. Is this how they should appear or does this indicate that my cooling is insufficient (aka the core is overheating)?
 
Purple? Mine are a kind of reflective blue, but they change colors depending on the angle from which the light reflects; I can see how'd they be purple under some lights/angles. You're fine.
 
a fried chip will normally be brown, not purple tinted ;)

back in the athlon tbird days, the blue cores were the ones to have - they were made at a different plant and clocked much better than the (green?) ones. its all a matter of where they were made :)
