Pentium 2/3 Questions

I recently acquired a Compaq Proliant 1850r. Dual Pentium 2 450MHz CPUs @ 100MHz FSB.

I have 2 Pentium 3 Slot 1 CPUs, a 700MHz and a 733MHz. I want to get one of these into this machine, then buy another matching CPU off eBay to get the matched pair. However, when I put one of the Pentium 3's in the board, the machine refuses to power on. Back to a Pentium 2 and it powers on fine.
 
Do you have the terminator card in slot 2?

edit: also, have you verified that machine can take coppermine's?
 
^ yep one of those two is going to be the issue here.

1. If you're only running one cpu you must have the blank terminator card in the other slot.

2. Since that board was originially made for PII's it's almost certainly going to support only up to 100fsb. Your 733 is definitely a 133fsb coppermine, and you'll have to check on the 700. But I doubt any 133's are going to work. However, if you can get it to work with 100's then there are some good cpu's out there for you to use...in fact, I'm writing this on two of them right now :cool: PIII 800E's
 
Not that this is the be all end all answer, but the fastest upgrade CPU they list for an 1850r is a P3 600 (Katmai core). There are 2 pairs of 600s on ebay right now for $50 :(

I'd do a bit more homework and see if, as eva_unit_0 mentioned, you can get P3 E's into this box. At least you'd have a few options that way. If not, there is nothing wrong with 600's, ... I've got a few dually 600 machines that still work great. I just dont know if I'd pay $50 a pair for old CPU's.

Yeah especially when it's already got dual 450's and I doubt you'd see any REAL increase from going to 600's. Heck, it's already got dual 450's...that's more than enough for many applications. What are you looking to do with this? For almost all normal desktop work it would do great, especially if you ran linux on it due to the dual cpu's :)

Our department's server is a quad Xeon 450 Mhz box that runs Suse Enterprise 9.3 with Apache, Samba, MySQL, PureFTP and X (the server monitor group is confused by command lines) and it's smooth as glass. Heck even compiling code only takes around 2-5 minutes tops.

The board won't run coppermines because of the voltage difference, not the FSB. I seem to remember some slot1 adapters let you change voltage using jumpers. Some mobo's, too. But, compaq boards are crap.

The BX440 is flexible although I don't know if higher multipliers are automatically supported.

I checked my BH6 manual, the earliest version still supported an 8x multiplier....but we're talking about ABit here.

Bottom line, stick with the 450s. Anything else is not worth the hassle.

There is a trick you can do with the PIII 800 CPUs to force them up to 1.85V which is possibly supported by the mobo. I used this trick on one of the old Asus P2B-D mobos and it worked great. I'll try to find the link.
