I bought a nice little machine today at a thrift store.

It's got a P1 133Mhz chip

no bios options and (i'm sure) no pci/agp lock

we'll see what she can do.

The best part is .. I only paid 13 bucks for the whole pc lol..

I dont think you can get 1 mhz out of it :) but prove me wrong hehe..

Overclocking on a beast like that is probably done through jumper, not BIOS

Or even voltage modding.

Definetly not going to have those options in the BIOS...

I recall old AMD K6-2's had the jumpers to set FSB and all that ish. That was old skool overclocking

Yeah, with old systems you had to set the on-board jumpers to get the right clock speed and voltage, no BIOS options. If you have a super socket 7 board, you can change the front-side bus to 100mhz, and that chip should do 200mhz no problem. I have a P133 that's setup exactly like that, actually. (Of course, the reason that I have the Pentium in there instead of a better processor is because I fried a K6-2 trying to get it past 700mhz... :p )

we'll that's interesting about the jumpers .. never thought of that before.

I'm going to try a windows based overclocking ultility .. any good ones?

it would help if i knew exactly what mobo i have

I'm going to run everest home edition as soon as i get a 10/100 in it.

The only way you will overclock it is through jumpers, you can do it through a software utility because the board BIOS simply does not support it. Unless your OS has a mechanical arm that can change the jumpers for you then there wont be a software based OC utility ;)

On a sort of related note, I would love to get my hands on an old 133-200mhz pentium. One of my favorite games was Privateer 2, unfortunately that game refuses to run on anything faster than that. The developers failed to make a way for the game to run at a fixed rate....it runs as fast as the computer will allow it to. Basically on anything faster than 200mhz it means instant death :)

You won't be able to change the clock speed from within Windows, since changing the clock speed while it's running isn't within the capabilities of the hardware. No choice other than to open up the case. :) If it's a user-assembled PC, then the jumper settings should be silkscreened onto the motherboard. If it's an OEM / prebuilt, you might have a bit more difficulty determining the jumpter settings.

Erasmus: You want mine? I'm not using it for anything right now.

should be labeled on the mobo somewhere... all my socket 7 mobos have labels

there is a set of jumpers as follows

CLK1 . [ . .]
CLK2 [. .] .
CLK3 . [. . ]
BF1 [. .] .
BF2 . [ . .]

the clk's should be the FSB and the BF's the multi... are the different jumper settings silkscreend on the board anywhere?

VERY COOL

not sure what yo u mean about the different jumper seattings silked on the board

the CLD and BF are silked right beside the jumpers like in my last post .. other than that i don't know what i'm looking for

by that i mean that htere might be a chart (or three :p)silkscreend on the board somewhere telling you that when you set BF1 to 1-2 and BF2 to 2-3 the multiplier will be set to 2, or something along those lines. i know my asus p5a-b has a 3 charts on it for voltage, mutli, and fsb.

on vs off isn't silked on there anywhere but it seams like left set is on and right set is off .. otherwise you would have two CLKs

oh hell yea .. it's got silks for fsb/multi/and vcore jumper combos

yes!

humm. interesting

BF1 BF2 FREQ.RATIO
1-2 1-2 1.5x
2-3 1-2 2X
1-2 2-3 3X
2-3 2-3 2.5X

similar setup for CLK and Vcore

but i can't figure out what jumper position is 1-2 and which is 2-3

you would think just left to right would be 1 2 3

so CLK1 . [. .] would be CLK1 2-3 right

well if that's so then stock is

CLK1 . [ . .]
CLK2 [. .] .
CLk3 . [. . ]

shouldn't that be CLK1 CLK2 CLK3
2-3 1-2 2-3

well that combo doesn't exist on the CLK silk

so i'm think maybe it's backward creating a 1-2 2-3 1-2 combo which does exist and corresponds to 66MHz

I think that's it bec there's a sticker on the front claiming 133mhz

using the same backwards logic with the multi pins i get 66mhz x 2multi = 133

nice ... so i should be able to bump it to a 3 multi .. giving.. 198 if i will do it

I got a P2, 333 MHz (PC 300PL, ECC SDRAM, SCSI HDD and all that) for around 8 Euro a year ago, and I feel that I could have lowered the price even more :D

(not that it's such a bad system, mind you ^_- )

I think that there's a bottom floor to obsolete PC prices. $12 or less (~6 Euro?), and it's really not even worth spending the time to try to sell it.

it's pissing me off because I can't get cpu-z or everest on it.

the cd rom won't read my cd-r for some reason

cupz from floppy says the "due to restriction by adminstrator it can't run"

and i can't figure out how to use pkunzip ...

and i don't have a 10/100 in it yet

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, that must be ancient, the only CD-ROM I've ever had that problem with was my very first drive, a 4X on my first computer (in 1994?)...

What OS is it that computer running?

Ah, the P133's.. skipped those completely; I was a 486DX4/(100,133) man myself.

You won't get 198 out of a P133. The Pentiums were actually a pretty bad design overall. Hell, 386, 486, and Pentium MMX's overclocked better. (And I bloody well should know. OC'd all of 'em.) ;)

You need to look at BF1/BF2, not mult. Pentiums don't like multiplier OCing, but PMMX's eat FSB up if you've got good memory. (Back then, that was no small feat.) Your OC is going to be totally memory dependent; moreso than even now. SIMMs are not built to go anywhere near a 100MHz FSB, which is part of why the switch to DIMMs.

If it's a good board, you might have 75MHz. But this is back with different binning methods; P133's were CPUs that binned at 133, and weren't tested higher. So you might end up with one that'll do a whopping 134, or one that's good to 166MHz+. (If it was built pre-P150, IIRC. My history is a little rusty, because, again; I skipped after the P60/P90 math debacle. Most of my direct experience here comes from PMMX and my 233 @ 290.5 and beyond.)

This is going to be a lot of very careful experimenting; don't mess with the voltage. There should be at least *six* jumpers for voltage. Late P54's onwards are the first dual voltage, and generally, there are FIXED voltages, not increments.

I picked up a PIII 933 today for $30. Came with a GeForce3, 128 megs of RAM, and a bad cooler. :p

The Pentium 1 was the 586, PPro, P2, P!!! are all 686, so I guess it's fair to say that the PPro (686) design was better than the 586 :)

you guys were right .. i can't get it to budge

all the higher bf ratios make the core clock lower

if bf different tha multi?

Overclocking these things is a lost art, one that the vast majority of 'leet overclockers' today have zero knowledge of. (Back when I started overclocking, you were extreme if you needed a heatsink.)

More likely the board won't go over a 66 FSB; it's probably a 33/50/66. But I misread original post with the jumpers; CLK is what you're looking for. Bleah. (Bear in mind, every single board is different, and there are no standard jumper settings.)

You're going to need the manual to really do anything with the CLK jumpers, and it sounds like many cheapass PoS OEM boards in that the settings do not agree with the manual. These are not fun to work on, in the least.

the charts for clk bf and vcore are silked onto the pcb

i put the jumpers to 75 fsb vs. 66 and it wouldn't post

i tried all different bf combos to no avail

there are two bf channels bf1 and bf2 allowing 1-2 2-3 ... 2-3 2-3 .... 1-2 1-2 etc jumper setting

the silk says it should change from 1.5x to 3x in .5 increments

when i changed it to 3x vs. the defaut 2x i got no change in core clock via cpuz

i'm just going to use it for parts .. the cpu fan fits my kt3 333 northbride heatsink lol

plus i've never had two hardrives in the same rig so i'll probalby throw this new 1gig in my other machine to mess with raid and what not

IIRC, 133=66x2 (as you said already). That means that BF1=2-3 and BF2=1-2
In your diagram, the right side is 1 and the left is 3.

IOW:
___3 2 1
C1 . [. .]
C2[. .] .
C3 . [. .]
B1[. .] .
B2 . [. .]

I got my P120 to post at 200Mhz, but it would hang while loading windows 95.

More likely you've got a chipset or cache that won't post at 75MHz; very common problem, because the L2 cache is on the motherboard. You can try disabling it, if all you want is clock, and that may work. IIRC, pre-VX boards run L2 at half FSB, which would mean 33MHz @ 66MHz and 37.5MHz @ 75MHz. (Remember, P54's are not EDO, they're still FPM 60ns/70ns.) Could also be the memory.

The chipsets themselves from that era are not like chipsets today; back then, you had an Intel reference design, which was it. The majors back then are the i430 family including the VX, HX, and TX. (I've owned all three.) HX/TX were geared towards P55C/PMMX, and some 430TX boards had up to an 83MHz FSB. The real problem was VX; there were no less than 25 different knockoff VX chipsets on the market; VX, VX+, VXPro, VX++, VXPro+, VXTurbo, VXPlus, TurboVX, ProVX, 430VXF, etcetera. They were all poorly done knockoffs that didn't work worth a damn, but got sold for very cheap on boards from MSI, PCChips/Amptron/Soltek, Mustang, LuckyStar, etcetera. If you've got something like a VXPro, you can forget getting anything useful out of the box, sadly.

I can believe it; the 120's were oddly binned. I never figured out, and Intel wouldn't tell me. Those things could get some serious ramp on certain steppings though; I know someone who was running a 120 at 150 in an i430HX, stable.
I still miss my ultimate setup; I-Forget-Who-I-Think-AOpen i430TX late-rev board with 50-90MHz FSB. I had a P233MMX and a genuine honest to gods TEC heatsink on it. (Was like a 26W TEC.) I ran that thing at default-mult 83MHz FSB with Hitachi EDO. The PCI bus was locked because it had it's own clock gen crystal. Later on replaced it with an Aopen ATC5200 Super7 (VIA MVP3CE) that really excelled; I got that thing to POST with good PC66 and a 3x112 clock, but couldn't keep it stable enough for daily at anything over a 100 FSB.

Many of the HX and TX motherboards can do 450 to 500 MHz with a K6-2. Add a K6-2+, and the L2 cache become L3. See Oldie tuning I use an Asus TXP4 with a K6-2+ 450 @500 everyday at work as a websurfing machine to look up parts. With the 83 MHz bus, the PCI ends up pretty high, but it has yet to give me a propblem, and I've set up quite a few machines this way.

and i can't figure out how to use pkunzip ...

Lol, those were the days! :D

I may not be as old as some of our other [H] members here, but I sure as heck know how to use good 'ol PKUNZIP! Must be from my days of BBSing; you know, initiating file trasnfers with X, Y, or ZMODEM, playing door games, etc. :)

Zmodem RULES !!! what was Ymodem for ??? hehe

BBS - I miss - so much - nothing compares - it was like a cult - your best friend LOL!!!

What was that one medieval style adventure door game ... ? had 4 or 5 letters in the name, acronym for something ... I wanna say R.O.T.T. but that was old school first person shooter - BTW my first multiplayer/modem game - I miss setting up sessions for DESCENT competitions over the BBS

NICE.... around here that would about 50-$75 because it would be a good "aol computer"

Still have my "ES" pentiums put up in a box... 75,90,100,120,150,166 non mmx
