OK, another dumb question, but this has nothing to do with 88's so I'll put this here...

Anyways, I have 1 775 rig already running a P4 and another P4 waiting for my next 3 way setup. Im even looking at buying a 1U server to run as a file keep just to save space and keep it simple. Question in point is, are Pent D's good enough to run a 2core SMP VM? I tried on my P4 (2.8ghz I think, pretend dual core) but it bombed too hard, was going WAY to slow, like 300 ppd slow, and was slowing down my GPU's so I cut it (yes, was using AFC)

Would some 3.2 ghz Pent D's do better? they are pretty cheap still compared to old core2's and I'd like to get a few more PPD out of my cans. Id have 3 of them eventually..
 
i would bite the bullet and go with something cheap like the e5200 and just overclock the living hell out of it.. would get way more ppd then a pentium D..
 
I ran the LinSMP client on a Pentium D 915 for a while (not in a VM - this was within native Linux), and it had decent production. I was getting about 900-1000PPD, with the chip overclocked to 3GHz. Mind you, when I replaced it with an E2140 running at 1.6GHz (my board won't overclock with this chip), it went up to about 1500PPD, so even a slow C2D would be much faster.

Basically, if you can get a few C2Ds for decent prices, then that would be preferable. However, the Pentium Ds will give you a nice little boost.

I'll note here that having run native Linux and Linux in a VM on the same computer at different times, there is no noticeable difference in production. So if its running fine on a Pent D native, it'll be fine in a VM assuming you have enough RAM.

But as already mentioned, a Core2 will kill a P-D. If you don't mind used, I've seen E6400's going for $30-40.

Yes, this is true, but only if the CPU in question has VT-x.

The 9x5 Pentium D chips (including my 915 of course) as well as most of the Pentium Dual-Core chips and some other Core 2-based processors do not support VT-x, so either you need to avoid them or you need to run Linux natively. Wikipedia has pages where they list all of Intel's different CPU brands along with information like steppings, manufacturing processes, codenames, supported technologies (VT-x, x86-64, etc.), and other useful information, so I recommend that those pages be consulted before you make any purchases.

so if I get you right, the e6600 and e6750 would both be good? I just closed a deal for a P4 and my 88GTX for both of those

Yes, they both have VT-x and are pretty fast chips in their own right.
